It wasn't a meeting with the enemy, but I was in Tokyo many years ago and saw a young woman wearing a crimson sweatshirt with BAMA printed on the front. I stopped her and asked if she had ever been to Alabama. She seemed confused as to why I would ask, so I explained what the word on the front of her sweatshirt meant. She said she had bought the sweatshirt because it was "American." Now that she knew what it stood for, she was thrilled. She was cute, but it didn't turn into a five day tour of the city.

I found it ironic that the younger generation liked American things, while the older generations still hated us for our opposition in WWII. It made for interesting times in Japan, to say the least.
Great story --- sorry there was no "tour of the city" --

My oldest one is studying for a semester at the law school of the Université de Paris. I'm going to see her for a week in mid-november not in Paris but in Vienna. I decided to rent a car. We're going to visit Budapest too !! What a coincidence !!! Did you like both cities ? I might meet some SEC fans during my vacations ;-)
I've heard good things about Budapest but I haven't visited. OTOH, Vienna is one of my top cities in the world...

They have probably mostly died off, but I used to hear anti-Japanese views a good bit when I was younger. Any further discussion of that would get the thread moved to NS.

Bama in Q - this has probably been asked and answered before . . . and I'm sorry for the redundancy . . . but what's your connection to the Tide?

Budapest is a very friendly city; be careful in the casino!

No problem VT. In 92, when I was studying at the Business school for my CPA exams, I watched the game Bama - Miami. For a guy who lives in Canada, the deep south is something intriguing. Bama was the underdog. I cheered for Bama and we won the game. Since that day, I became a hard die Bama fan. Five years ago, I was supposed to come to Tuscaloosa with a friend but I got divorced and my plan to watch a game in BDS finally never materialized. I don't know when but I know for sure that one day I will come to Tuscaloosa with my Bama shirt and my french canadian accent to watch a game

Last November, I was with an Auburn "acquaintance" in the Montreal airport waiting for a flight out. We ran into 4 guys wearing Bama attire and talked for a moment. They were father and three sons heading to Tuscaloosa for the MSU game. The guy had attended a conference in Tuscaloosa (I may already be getting this wrong) and fell for Bama. My buddy asked if that had taken place at Auburn the guy would be an Auburn fan? His response, "Who?"

This past summer on my cruise and excursions, we saw a few Auburn and Clemson fans. It was a cruise to New England and Canada. I never said anything to them. I did see some BAMA fans on the cruise too.

I was fortunate to meet one of Bear Bryant's nieces. I saw a family with BAMA shirts on so I started talking football with them. I talked with her and her husband for about 15 minutes on one of the excursions. I even got my picture made with her. :) It was neat to hear her tell a few stories.

Just about every time I have been on vacation out of country, I have seen several Bama fans. It is an instant connection for me to talk to someone I don't even know when they are wearing BAMA. RTR!!

You're right ! When you say Tabarn.. and côlis..., you're not swearing in french but in québécois

We may speak french but the quebecers are more american than french. Sometimes, they don't even understand us. Our ancestors came from Europe 400 years ago so we don't have anything (except the language) in common with them.

Est-ce que tu parles français ?

I cannot link it here, but youtube has a video about Quebecois called "I am not Canadian."
"I speak I speak Quebecois and Jouale, not French or Hanglish."
"Maybe I can't turn right on a red light, but taber..., I can go right through it!"
