Sorry it's a day late:

An offensive lineman for Red blocks a D-lineman for White and drives him about 2 yds past the line of scrimmage. If the qb for Red throws a pass, is the offensive lineman illegally downfield?

Not if he is engaged in a block.

I agree with KC, but will add...he must have been engaged in the block at or behind the line of scrimmage.

I tend to agree. If engaged in a block, he can be up to 3 yards beyond the LOS in college. If disengaged, he must remain where he is.

Of course, if the pass is thrown to a receiver who is behind the LOS (screen), the rules are different in college. Linemen can block downfield. Don't know if this applies in HS...

I agree. I say that he is not far enough downfield to be cited a penalty.

I am in agreeement. If he is engaged in a block and is forced into that area there is no call. If the play takes place from line of scrimmage......

I'd agree, too. No penalty since the block started at the line scrimmage.

Good job - y'all are all over it. Since the O lineman contacted the D lineman at the line of scrimmage, he's good. However, he cannot go past 2 yds from the LOS. Extra bonus points for you, NY. It is a moot point if the pass doesn't go past the LOS - ineligibles can block downfield if a forward pass does not pass the LOS.
