Alright, by request, here's an update.

***I don't know if we are reserving spots by position at this point. Rather, I believe that we are going to take the best athletes, regardless of position at this point from a list that the staff has (like they do when ranking the current team).

As far as numbers go, I don't see how we can take less than 25. With academics being a concern on several commits and prospects, coupled with the talent out there, it's nearly impossible not to.

***Current commitments

2008 backcounters (2)
RB Jermaine Preyear- Delayed enrollment to recover from surgery.
OL/DL Kerry Murphy- IF IF IF he can finish this last make-up class strong this month, he'll be on campus soon. If he can't, Warmack will take this spot since he is enrolling in January.

2009 (19)
OFFENSE
QB AJ McCarron
RB Trent Richardson
OT/OG Anthony Steen (needs academic work)
OG Chance Warmack (will enroll in January)
OT Darius McKeller
OG Kellen Williams
OT/OG James Carpenter (Juco, will enroll in January)

ATHLETES
OT/DL DJ Fluker- could play either side and dominate. I'm leaning OT.
FB/LB Mike Marrow- I'm leaning HB.
WR/LB Michael Bowman- Leaning WR, but is a "soft" commitment and needs some academic work.
DE/TE William Ming- leaning WDE, but with the depth we have in this class at DL, TE is an option.

DEFENSE
DE Anthony Orr
DE Darrington Sentimore (needs academic work)
SDE/NG Quinton Dial
NG/SDE Chris Bonds
LB Nico Johnson
LB Jonathan Atchison
CB Gerald West
S Rod Woodson (needs academic work)

****all academic concerns are very doable

I've sat here and typed, deleted, and retyped several lists only to feel that I'm not that comfortable making any real big predictions right now. So many variables exist.

From a list of guys I feel we have at least a 50% shot at, the only ones I feel have a spot regardless are CB Dre Kirkpatrick, OT Bobbie Massie (some academic work needed), LB Tana Patrick and WR Reuben Randle.

From that same list, there are several guys that are nearly impossible not to take: OT/DT Brandon Moore, Jack LB Fletcher Cox (grade concerns), WR Kevin Norwood, Slot WR Chad Bumphis, Jack LB Ed Stinson, WR Kendall Kelly. There may be guys from this list who get left out.

Guys that we would take regardless, but I feel we have a less than 50% chance at getting: S Darren Myles, CB Janzen Jackson, CB Branden Smith, OT Morgan Moses

Guys that would be nearly impossbile to turn down, but we have a less than 50% chance at: Slot WR Marsalis Teague, LB Johnathan Stewart, LB Barkevious Mingo, WR Patrick Patterson

Guys that have Tide at or tied at top that could still be a part of this class: CB Eric Gordon (grade concerns), LB Greg King, LB Petey Smith, CB Gene Robinson

And, of course, this staff never ceases to have a surprise or two.

***PHEW*** :)

Good analysis. Couple of things that I think are happening based on outcome of past two week's activities. First, believe the ship has sailed on Stinson... I tend to believe that Atchison's commitment indicates that because I'm sold on Patrick and Cox coming on board eventually (Cox has major grade situation to overcome). Second, I would lean Marrow to FB/TE/HB based on three things... his athleticism, the fact Baron Huber will be graduating next year, and bringing in so many ILB prospects between last year and this year. If that is the case, it may be hoped that he will develop into a Travis McCall-type player one day. Finally, I don't think Murphy gets here... and if he does, that he will be able to make the grades to stay. Too much is happening in taking OL/DT prospects to believe that the staff is counting on him.

I rarely post, but read most of the recruiting and football news. I check several times a day. I have no inside information; I am simply an alabama football FANATIC and have been since I was very young.

A HUGE thankyou to you, surfer, BET, Brett and all the others for so much great information. I noticed when I pulled up this thread that there were currently 104 views with 0 replies and I just wanted to let you guys know that there are many of us who really appreciate yall's posts. THANKS and I look forward to reading more from you guys everyday!:)

It sounds as if Kerry Murphy has finally gotten a passing ACT/SAT score and the classes he's taking are those necessary to meet the increased core requirement (16 core classes rather than the 14 of previous years). Does that jive with what you're hearing?

Good ... then I want all three. :)

Seriously, the comparison to Florida showed up the need for playmakers in the passing game. Even without Harvin, they had guys making plays all over the field.

That is all our offense really needs to take off. A good to great QB that can do more than just not lose and playmakers that can make plays to free up our run game, and I certainly have nothing against JP but why can't we bring in a Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, or Matt Stafford type?

Good work on the synopsis RTO, I always appreciate the recruiting insight.

It's just been said that he was working on two classes, and needed to get them up to a certain score to get in. But like BR said, it's still not certain and may never be.

RTO:

I didn't see a mention of Montez Robinson. Have we simply gone in another direction since he committed to the barn, even though he now is taking a hard look at us?

On another note, great update.

MKA

I think we'd have to miss out on Cox and Stinson, first. Gut says he ends up at Purdue.

Hmm ... interesting. Andrew Bone says Montez would be "for sure" one of our top five recruits if we could get him. (Maybe Andrew didn't read the question carefully or something.)

bama2268: IF we were to land Montez Robinson, would you consider him to be one of our top five recruits? Just wondering how good he is.

Andrew Bone: For sure. Alabama is really seeking an outside speed rush end, and Robinson is perfect for coach Nick Saban's defense.

Well Star was highly rated last year and from everything I have read, including about his performance in the elite-11 (which Star also did well the year prior), AJ could be that type of passer. One thing I will say, while I think we do need more playmakers, there are guys currently on the team that I think as they mature can help take the load off of Julio. Also as much as I like JP and think he did a great job as the leader of this team, he does have a tendency to lock in to one WR (DJ last year, Julio this year). There have been instances where we have had receivers open but JP never looked their way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't McElroy set some single season passing records for his classification? And he followed Chase Daniel, which is a pretty darn good QB in his own right. I think GM could put up some pretty impressive #'s next year, especially, if we have a big play threat opposite of JJ. Does anyone feel that Earl Alexander, given he's healthy, could be that threat?

Guys, just a reminder that this is the recruiting board... if you want to carry the conversation about current players onto the football board, feel free to do so. In fact, I think there's a QB thread that's about 5 pages long.

WE are. His name is A J McCarron

Speaking of recruiting, Coach Saban is wasting no time whatsoever on the recruiting trails.

After the SEC Championship Game on Saturday afternoon, Saban was on the road Monday, visiting Nico Johnson, Gerald West, and Trent Richardson. Today he was again on the road, this time heading over to North Louisiana to visit Kenny Bell and Reuben Randle.

What can you say? The man is just a machine when it comes to recruiting. You can bet from now until National Signing Day, he will be relentless.
