the idea is that less restrictions on exhaust flow can provide more power. Headers can do that, exhaust tips aren't typically a restriction point. For the most part they are really just there to look "cool" though to me the look foolish. A literal "I have more money than sense sign"

Two opinions about oversize exhausts

It's called a 'riceboy' get used to them.It's like stuffinga sock down the frontof your trousers. Underneath you are still tiny.

It allows exhaust gases from the engine to flow out better, letting the engine breathe out easier. Power gains can be realized from this. Stock exhaust systems are designed to restrict noise and pollution, thus are small in piping diameter, with other obstructions. Thus, it is recommended that car enthusiasts replace their intake and exhaust system as the first upgrade steps.Of course, I'm assuming that we're talking about the whole exhaust system, and not just the tip.
My dual DTM-styled chrome muffler tips give me extra 15HP!!!! LOL
