The Braves, of course, could get away with not having middle relief in the regular season because their gunslingers could all pitch 7-8 innings almost every game.
Agreed, but the Yankees were different because they worked counts. From the first inning, they worked counts. They knew that they would lose in a battle of starters to pretty much anyone. They wanted the starters out by the end of the 6th inning, and they considered any game that they entered the 7th with a tie or lead to be a win.

I wish that lost art could be revived. Working counts is a strategy, like stealing bases, that has been almost totally lost.
