Why in the world did we run three pathetic running plays and not even take a shot at the end zone. I've never been more disgusted at a football game than I was yesterday. I can handle a team just kicking your butt, but to just give the game away like we did is sickening. I'm upset at the kicker, but I think we lost the game when we decided that we'd be better off just running the ball for 1 yard on three plays and trying a field goal.

Can someone explain this to me? First of all you're not guaranteed to make the field goal (as was proved yesterday) and second of all, what if Ark. was to get a kickoff return or a good drive going with 3 minutes left. I just don't understand how you play for three in that situation.

For God's sake, get a TD. Give it your best shot, and if you come up short...take the shot at 3.

If someone else understands why this happened...please feel free to enlighten me. No bones about it...we didn't lose that game in overtime...we lost that game with 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter when we'd rather have a field goal try then going for a TD. Maybe that's why our redzone offense stinks so much.

Excuse the vent...it's cathartic!

I did not intend to post after this loss, but I agree totally. This is where the game was lost. I told my son that if it went to O/T we would lose, so with a first down around the 10-11 yd line we run 3 staight ahead and then miss the field gold. IMO that was when we lost the game.

It looked like pretty good stratigy yesterday. Run the clock out and put the famous Van Tiffin's son in, who I believe up to that point was 6 of 7 this year, for the game winner. You kick off to Arky and with the way our D was playing you know they ain't got time to drive the length of the field and we win.

But today I would do just as you said. Invent that time machine and we will go back and send coach a memo. Throw the ball to the endzone!:biggrin2:
Besides did you see those sorry refs! We were robbed!;)

I agree with you for the most part, TX.

For those who were saying that if Tiffin had made the kick, it would have been the right call, that isn't true. I was yelling at my TV really loudly, when the offense went conservative at the end of the game. It wasn't hindsite with me. Arkansas couldn't stop JPW all day long. They had no answer for him, other than one freak forced fumble. If this game was a defensive struggle and our offense was struggling, then you play for the field goal there. That definitely wasn't the case yesterday. They had the Hog's jugular exposed, we had the knife out, but we didn't make the cut. You all are right that our running game wasn't having the best day, but the fact was that we didn't really need it with the passing game working so well. We just needed to throw in a run or two here and there to keep the defense honest.

As was said here before, even if Bama had made the field goal, it would have given Arkansas plenty of time for their own FG drive. Why not kill the clock and try to score a TD while you are at it? Even if Tiffin had made it, it would have been a bad call. It just wouldn't have been a bad call that cost us the game.

TX, the one place that I disagree with you is that we did lose that game in OT too (the first OT, not the second). When Mitchell intercepted the ball, we played for a FG yet again. In the 2nd OT, we finally play for a TD and the Hogs still couldn't stop us. We actually would have been better off, if we hadn't intercepted it and Arkansas had scored a FG in the first OT. Then we would have been forced to go for a TD, which we would have gotten easily.

I also want to say that I was very impressed with the gameplan up until that point. I thought Shula did a great job with it. I also thought that refs were actually decent for a change.

I don't care how good your defense is when your given the opportunity to score a td you go for it...you never know tiffin could have put us up 20-17 but then on the next drive mcfadden breaks a long run...you never know whats going to happen in football...it was embarassing to see that playcalling yesterday

And i agree with coach Stallings in most cases. However, one thing to remember is that back then, Stallings' teams ran the ball fairly well. We dont. Not anymore. We've had trouble running the ball all year. I dont know why, but we cant run it. But the weird thing is that we were passing pretty much at will Saturday, so it does make me think maybe we should have at least taken a shot at the endzone with that much time left.

Wow, great point. Hell, we shouldn't have thrown it at all yesterday, and then enjoyed the beating we surely would've received.

I agree with Chuck, we were screaming at the tv also because the playcalling went flat. When you had a QB that was about 16 of 19 or so at the time you had to take a shot at the endzone. I'd much rather put the game on JPW than LT just because JPW is more seasoned. And to those that say only two bad things happen with a pass, well the passing game is what kept us in the ballgame y'day and in the other games as well. You stay with your strenghts IMO.

I found it frustrating at the time that we were obviously going for the FG, rather than the touchdown, and trying to run the clock. The reason for my frustration, though, wasn't that LT would MISS the chip shot; I was just afraid that 3 points wouldn't be enough to win the game and that Arkansas had enough time left to tie.

That concern was dead wrong. In fact, the defense held and the field goal WOULD have won in regulation.

I know this--I would have been yelling louder if we'd tried to pass and lost the ball via an interception or a fumble or something and never gotten the chance to win in the fourth quarter. Sometimes, what should have been winning decisions just go wrong.

Nutt would have called entirely different plays down by three than in a tie. He knew that there was no urgency to win it in regulation. He knew that his team received a huge boost with the missed kick, and the home team has a decided edge in OTs...

"One thing can happen when you run up the middle against Arkansas. You will be stopped and you're playing not to lose" - Me

If we're not willing to WIN the game and have some kahones, we shouldn't even have taken the field. Why not kick it on 1st down if that's where you'll be anyway on 4th down.

I and every tide fan I talked with at the game agrees with you. I wonder how JPW feels today? Maybe like CMS dosn't have confidence in his with the game on the line? I felt like we brought a knife to a gunfight. It made for a looooong trip home with two hog fans in the car.

Watching the 4Q of the game made me feel like taking a test. If I only need a 70 to pass, then I'm just going to work for a 75. In last year's Florida game, I didn't mind Shula trying to run up the score, despite Prothro's accident.
