2008 Olympic Thread

Phelps is just about as close to automatic as anything can get. The only person that can beat him (when it counts) is himself it seems. I think he'll get his eight gold medals.

Wilder's first fight, if I read correctly, will be broadcast at like 2:00 A.M. on Wednesday. CNBC/MSNBC/Universal HD has shown all of the boxing events.

Beach volleyball babes .... Where are all of those revealing Muslim women

I was watching on the news this morning where the Chinese have banned the serving of "traditional" foods at the Olympics. Hmmm... It makes me wonder what kind of food the Chinese people are eating and now calling "traditional". Whatever it is, it must be so secretive that the Chinese officials don't want the rest of the world to even see, much less taste. :eek2: :puke:

Dog has been removed from their restaurants . No joke

Sorry, I can't pass up an internet discussion of the Olympics without mentioning my disdain for the event.

So...I hate the Olympics.

Carry on.

Just curious to hear why...

There are a number of reasons why I hate the Olympics. The primary reason is based on the nature of the actual "games" featured by the event. It seems to me that many of the selected games favor European countries over the good ole' US of A. For example, American Football was, for all intents and purposes, invented in 1892. Basketball was invented a mere one year earlier, and it wasn't fully introduced to the Olympics until 1936, but at least it was introduced. Baseball has only appeared in 12 Olympiads, and it was invented in the 1860s. Soccer, as we now know it, only came around in the 1860s when the rough-play of rugby was removed from the game, and yet it has been played at every Olympiad except for two (including the first one in 1896)...and even worse, we still have a world cup that is a bigger deal than the Olympic version of the game.

It seems to me that at the very least Baseball should be fully introduced to the Olympics, and American Football should get a good look, too. When so many of the featured events did not originate in Athens but are still included in the Olympiad, and American sports are ignored (even though others have been given prominence by the Olympics before they were known as being international), it really rubs me the wrong way.

And still, I have a problem with America submitting to any human authority that is not exclusively American for any reason (from the U.N. and the Hague to the Olympic Committee). Basically, I'm an isolationist and believe in doing what is best for the interests of America and America alone.

Ooo...another reason. I hate "competitions" that are based on subjectivity, like gymnastics and figure skating. Stanley nickels are worth more than a gold medal in those types of events (as far as I'm concerned).

Another gold medal and another world record for Phelps. I mean seriously, it's about as close to a forgone conclusion that he's going to get his eight gold medals at this point, the guy simply can't be beat right now.

Honestly, tell me how football could be played in the Olympics? Who would fill the teams? The NFL wouldn't dare let its players go over and neither would colleges, especially during the Olympics that spill over into September. The other major hurdle would be the amount of games played. You could only play two games tops in the two weeks that are the Olympics.

Baseball does get dropped in 2012, but honestly, since it was introduced as a medal sport in 1992, the Americans have only won one gold (2000 in Sydney). The Cubans have won the rest. Major League Baseball never embraced it, especially since the competition happens directly during the start of the final stretch of the season.

Softball, which is also getting dropped in time for London, pretty much got the axe because America was way too dominant in Athens. Hopefully, it'll be back on the slate in 2016, especially if Chicago gets to be host.

That wasn't a problem for soccer, when most countries didn't have soccer teams but created them for the sole purpose of competing in the Olympics. Furthermore, you could play more than "two games" in the Olympics. Football doesn't have to be played on a Saturday.

So the Olympics just aren't "American" enough for you? Soccer was a world sport before American Football was born. The world doesn't revolve around the United States.
