2008 Olympic Thread

That wasn't a problem for soccer, when most countries didn't have soccer teams but created them for the sole purpose of competing in the Olympics. Furthermore, you could play more than "two games" in the Olympics. Football doesn't have to be played on a Saturday.

I'd said you could only play two games based on the fact it takes virtually every team a week to prepare for the next game in terms of body recovery, gameplanning, etc.

That's not to say, however, it hasn't been attempted. There is such a thing called the International Federation of American Football that hosts a World Cup event and has done so since 1999. They are also trying to get recognition as an Olympic sport.

The American team is filled with former college players from across the different divisions within the NCAA, yet, we're not talking the best of competition. Still, we did win the 2007 World Cup by beating Japan in the finals:

Phelps is a stingray

I don't think he's even human. He's put together like some kind of raptor dinosaur. I think a lot of these swimmers look like a missing link from the fish that first walked out of the drink.

Phelps just BARELY pulled out the 100m.
I seriously want to see the underwater instant replay of them touching the wall. I know the computers said Phelps touched first, and I want that to be absolutely true, but didn't it look like that other guy was there first?

I'm having a hard time trusting these Olympics people since they've let the Chinese tweens keep that gold medal and they obviously had some under the age of 16. Cheaters.

STOP HIJACKING THIS THREAD. Keep your political opinions either to yourself or in an appropriate thread. I also don't give a hoot if you don't like the Olympics, if you don't like them stay out of the thread.

In my opinion, the single most egregious incident was the British judge in the 1972 basketball final between the Soviets and the Americans. The Soviets are down by 1, take the last second shot, miss, and lose the game, But wait, the British judge says the clock didn't start. Play it over. the Soviets miss the shot again. US wins. Wait, the clock still wasn't right. Play it again. The Soviets made the shot on their third attempt, and win gold. I still have a hard place in my heart for that British official.
On the other hand, the Soviet professional athletes are the reason the NBA all-stars now play in the Olympics, so I guess the Soviets got what they deserved (a quadrennial butt-whuppin').

You forgot the part where the Russians were awarded a timeout after the fact because the present of FIBA (The international basketball association) pretty much took it upon himself to grant it.

His justification of that whole nonsense was, "The Americans are going to have to learn how to lose."

That was a huge travesty. One I remember watching and not believing what I was seeing.

Though, I did enjoy the Dream Team's reign of terror. Finally, we got to send a true representation of our best athletes.....yea, tho they were entirely in another league. We'll probably never see a team with that much talent on it again: Bird, Jordan, Magic, Charles, Ewing, Stockton, Pippen.

Our '72 team consisted of college-aged guys, going up against the "amatuers" of the Soviet Union.

In my opinion, the Dream Team was the best assembled group of talent that has ever competed together as a team... and that goes for any sport.
