*** 2013 Fall Camp Thread ***

These scrimmages are always a setup. I'm really only concerned with Ivory's injury. Hopefully he's ok... that's what this season will hinge on - injuries.

I certainly agree that the team must be focused and hungry, but I believe 2010 happened because of injuries as much as lack of hunger/focus/desire/etc.

i know coach saban has a habit of speaking his concern of mental errors, and attitude problems during this period of the season, but, i am worried about our two glaring areas as well
the def line and offensive line. normally his concern areas improve week to week. this time he
seems more irritated, the young men and their lack of focus and physical play. when dee hart is the leading rusher with less than a 5 yard average, with all the backs we have is scary. we need the big uglies to have a successful season, and i suspect a legitimate problem this season.

We'll be fine. Especially on the LOS.

Just can't expect last year's offensive line.

DL will be better IMO.

Reading Coach Saban's comments about today's scrimmage, I would think this was a 3 win team. BUT...the AP Poll came out today. We're #1. We've been picked #1 in just about every pre-season poll there is. So this is nothing more than him tearing down whatever the media and others are building up, just to keep everything even. I remember in 2010 (which, in my opinion, was the most talented team of all Coach Saban's teams here) everybody saying that we "should" win it all. Had the all-access show and all that nonsense, but when it came down to the come down, we couldn't get it done. Don't need to go through anything else like that. So yeah...I'm echoing Coach Saban. If it means the team staying hungry and needing someone to doubt them, I'll say it: "You guys stink!"

Coach Bryant used that tactic before almost every game. Fear of failure might be the most powerful motivator. It sure turns my crank. I never wanted to let my Dad down.

That's right. You have to expect that after back to back NC titles, it's natural to rank the Tide #1 in all the preseason polls. But as CNS is famous for saying, "This is not last year's team".
This is a brand new team who hasn't yet played a single game and CNS is doing all he can to prepare them for that first game. Then, after that one, the next. CNS never has been one to pat guys on the back and inflate their egos.

Unlike some others who were giddy when CNS seemed please with the team's performance in camp, Coach Saban's post scrimmage presser makes me smile a little. When he's a bit salty things tend to get done. Whether he's pleased or frustrated, I still expect to see a really good football team take the field in two weeks.

With Ivory we're going to need Lake, Liner, and maybe Robinson to be ready to go. Ivory was beat up a lot last year too IIRC. I think it was his ankles that gave him problems in '12.

Well, to be quite honest, when Saban is positive it seems to be because the team needs some positive affirmation because they're too down on themselves. When he's frank, tough, and scathing it is because he's pushing them to get from 'pretty good' to championship caliber. I could be wrong but I think yesterday was meant to be critical and highlight deficiencies so they can improve on them in the next two weeks.

I always figured that about 25% of what he says in these pressers is information for the public and the rest is communication to the team...

Geno Smith...smh. Lets hope the next man up is ready to go...at a minimum this has to be a game suspension, right? I wouldn't be surprised if it was more games or worse. :/

When I read CNS's comments, I saw a big circle. He said the OL was soft but the DL didn't get much of a push. That doesn't add up.

Is the team required to watch his press conferences? Or, are you saying he tells the team the same thing that he tells the media? Or, are we just assuming that all of the players watch the pressers the way we fans do?

I hear lots of folks saying that something said in the presser was for the benefit of the team, but that just doesn't make sense to me. Seems like they have way more to do and think about that the press conferences, especially since they know most of what he is saying anyway from first hand experience.

Don't think for a minute that players don't watch the press conferences and never think that when Coach Saban is speaking he doesn't have particular audiences and goals in mind. He would never call out a player via press conference, but I think he at least reinforces what's been communicated to the team when he's at the podium.

Even if the players don't watch, their friends and families definitely do. Coach Saban's interaction with the media will come up during the players regular conversations with "outsiders" and may have an impact.

There's no way to explain some of remarks other than being for internal consumption. His players are glued to the screen, hanging on every word. Every time he mentions a name, it's for a reason. No man who's won three of the last four NCs gets up and rambles mindlessly. That's just silly...

I know one coach who won 1 NC that rambles at PC. ;)
