Former Georgetown hoops coach, John Thompson, dead at 78. One of best who ever coached any sport, IMHO.

" In 27 seasons, Thompson, 78, compiled a coaching record of 596-239. Perhaps his biggest number was 97 percent, as in that’s how many of his players stayed all four years and left with a college degree. "

I saw him pitch for the Mets against the Reds as a young pitcher. He tried to throw 3 fastballs in a row past Tony Perez. The 3rd one was still rising as it cleared the center field fence. He learned quickly, I might add....

Gale Sayers, the Kansas Comet, remains my favorite NFL running back of all time.

In the '65 NFL draft the Bears took Dick Butkus and Sayers, back-to-back - Butkus with the 3rd pick, Sayers 4th.

The #1 pick that year was Auburn RB Tucker Frederickson, who had basically a "serviceable" career .

Joe Namath was drafted 12th, by the St. Louis Cardinals, but signed instead with the Jets of the rival AFL.
