He was a Navy veteran.....and although he didn't write the song, "Compared to What" was a song that criticized the Vietnam War.

The first time I heard "Compared to What" it was while watching a surf movie as part of the soundtrack. I was hooked right then and there and immediately went out and purchased "Swiss Movement".
