Who says we aren’t supposed to beat UGA? Kirby is literally 1-5 against us for a reason.
Well we won't be favored no matter what because the UGA team will be deeper, more highly rated (stars) and more experienced. Now I could have said that about Alabama most of the last 17 years and we still lost to inferior teams on paper. Plus I think the media can sometimes apply too much importance to the coach. Saban's retired, Kirby should now be the new Darth Vader. but the coaches don't play the game and sometimes Darth gets whipped.

Someone did make a good point that Kirby could always count on Saban to show up and do exactly what he expected. It remains to be seen about this staff, how shifty they will be. I believe there is an optimal level of "shiftyness". You want to do what they didn't plan for but if you roll out an entirely new system you haven't run live before you might suck at it.

I will say all the pressure will be on them. It reminds me of that 08 game in Atlanta against Clemson.

Probably depends on how we look in the first few games. If Milroe looks good and the defense isn't super leaky then a lot of people will pick us. But I'd bet right now most people are leaning UGA and I don't blame them.

GA was able to cake walk most of last year primarily talent alone until they played us. And they only lost to us by 3 in a dog fight. They will be a good to great team again based upon mostly talent and they rarely fail to execute until they meet an equal or better team under Kirby. We can beat them, but it will take a lot of gelling of our team.

Right now, early betting lines have us as a 5.5 point underdog to UGA. Over history, a 5.5 point underdog wins the game straight-up about a third of the time.

Note that this is not covering the spread (i.e., losing by less than 5.5). It's winning the game outright.

It'll be interesting to see how that line moves as we get closer to September 28.

Very talented team but UGA and bowlcut have some major adversity:

23 schedule: UT Martin / Ball St / Gamecocks / UAB / Barney / UK / Vandy / Gators / Mizzou / Ole Miss / Ucheat / GA tech

24 schedule: Clempson / Tenn Tech / UK / Bama / Barney (homecoming) / Miss St / Froghorns / Gators / Ole Miss / Ucheat / Umass / GA tech

It would be wonderful if UGA lost to us and then the Barn.

Re UGA: one thing that would help our young secondary get settled into their roles is a good push up front. The d-line getting pressure and making Beck have happy feet and rush throws would bode well for the backend of the defense. On those rare occasions during the Saban era when the QB had time to make his progressions, we had troubles. We've still got plenty of studs and Saban's departure doesn't mean we've suddenly forgotten how to defend. I'm not convinced they can stop our offense. I like our chances.

I am genuinely excited at the prospects of what our defensive front could be this year. I think there is talent and depth. With that said, I'm also very cautious of the hyperbole that comes out of fall camp. Whether it's from players, message boards or the media, there is so much exaggeration. I remember the prospects of how good our offensive line would be last year, and coming out of camp it sounded like we could just casually walk down the field for first downs behind our massive O-line. I heard someone say the other day that Dillon Gabriel will walk away with the Heisman in a laugher in Oregon's offense. I take everything that comes out of fall camp with a grain of salt.

Exactly! There are memories of pancake posses and greatness in fall camp only to see a bunch of guys get whipped during the season. I hope these things are accurate, but I'll believe it when I see it against another opponent on the field. Keep working hard! Roll Tide!

I also think our depth at DL is being overlooked, probably due to a lack of “superstar names.”

Just look at the numbers - we will be AT LEAST 6 deep at the two D-line spots. That’s three rotations of two guys: Keenan and Oatis, Timmy and Payne, J. Smith and Hill/Beaman/Renaud/Faga.

That’s so many capable bodies.

Also, they have been shifting players around on defense, looking at who can do what and where. But yeah, the DL should not have reason to stand with hands on the hips. Not with that kind of deep talent.

That's a fresh pass rusher for every single play of the game...:cool:

My post was more of a concern about our Oline than excitement about the DL. "No one is touching him" as he goes by isn't good. Lol!
