My biggest concern is that over the last 3 classes, we haven't landed any of the really top end ILB talent, and it appears that our new defensive approach requires that just as much or more than what we used to have, with perhaps even more premium on being able to flow quickly to fill assigned gaps and win those battles.

in 23 we got no one in the top 50 (considering Qua an Edge), 24 Dixon was highest at 17 and this year Johnson is the highest at 12.

Just seems like the position would have a pretty high priority especially with likely losing the top 3 from this season.
Abdul Sanders is #2 ILB per ESPN.
Darrell Johnson was a former 5 star and still one of the most highly rated ILB in the class.
Metz will surprised a lot of people.

Going to have competition from Mack also. I think Ty will be the undoubted starter, Lonegan will transfer and Mack and Russell will get more seasoning and fight for the #2 spot next year.
This is what I’ve thought. I kind of thought Lonergan would hit the portal now, rsther than spring. Mack might be the best passer, between him and Ty. But he’s no dual threat guy.

Assuming that Lawson & Campbell are declaring for the draft and Jefferson is out of eligibility, I expect that ILB will be the highest priority target out of the portal

ESPN is a huge outlier on rating both these guys.

Sanders is 2 on ESPN, but 84, 51 and 21 on On3, 247 and Rivals.

DJ is 2 on ESPN (they rate OLB sep still), but 19, 12 and 15 across On3, 247 and Rivals.

When 3 of the 4 cluster a guy around a number and there is a single outlier, I tend to think the 3 are more correct than the outlier, plus it's kinda silly that ESPN still hasn't changed to just rating LBs as a unit and then pulling out edge players into the same category. They've got Hill, our top Edge commit rated as an OLB; same category as DJ who's most likely an Off Ball Backer.

Very well could be. Alexander is the only other guy who got much real game work, and even that was minimal. Jones, J Oko earned spots on special teams and got some mop-up work so they at least got some reps with real athletes at SEC speed, while Dixon really got very limited mop-up work, so we're looking at a pretty big rebuild or ramp up if these are the guys.

All we can hope is the ones committed to Bama turns out to be good to great players regardless of rankings. Recuiting, as they say, is not an exact science.

One of things that Tyler Siskey mentioned on his podcast with Neal McCready was how much more selective Coach Saban was in the first half of his tenure (through 2014-15) in terms of “weeding out” recruits with character issues prior to signing. Siskey basically said Saban spent as much time exploring their character/personal background as he did analyzing their fit for his program athletically. He said CNS would drop the recruitment of a five star in a heartbeat if he felt the player could be a problem down the road.

The latter half of his tenure, CNS became more accepting of some “character projects” as recruits that quite frankly he wouldn’t have rolled the dice on in previous years - Primarily because recruiting had become so competitive and he felt some of these kids he could “reach”.

Is Jefferson going to be totally out of eligibility? I know he has been here two years but sometimes JUCO's only play one year at the JUCO school. I guess he is not eligible for a Covid year.

Wonder if it coincides with becoming a grandfather? Hitting that stage where changing people for the better outweighs coaching them to be better in football?

I think this impacts almost everyone’s thought process as they enter the latter portion of their lives. The last chance to “make a difference and positively impact lives”. I also think that tremendously successful people like CNS might even take bigger “flyers” on marginal situations/people. Why? Because they have been successfully “fixing things” most of their lives. It provides them the opportunity to prove they can “do it again”.

Sadly, what we learn through those years/experiences is that some people and situations aren’t “fixable”.

He is class of 2021, and Covid year was 2020. He is a senior. Yes, he is out of eligibility.
The only possible exception for him could be if Diego Pavia wins his lawsuit against the NCAA to count Junior College for eligibility and that could create a precedent for the others to follow.

You need to completely disregard okoronkwos ranking. Hes looked pretty great when he has played and will probably be a starter next year. And Luke Metz is going to be great eventually.

I'd expect we do target an experienced ILB in the portal to give us some seasoning at the position.

If I had to guess at portal "priorities" it'd be
DT
Edge (bandit)
IlB
OT (experienced backup)
WR

Corner will depend on D Jacksons draft grade and anyone portaling out.

Tight end may depend on who stays and goes. Same for safety.

Barring disaster I dont expect we look at rb or qb.

good point on J Oko with him playing overseas. I guess I just look back at the past and when we were the best, we had at least one of the two starting ILBs that was a top 10 guy rated guy coming out of HS, and we just don't have that level of talent right now. Even if he's way better than rated due to lack of exposure, I'm not sure he would have been a top 10 type guy.

Both Campbell & Lawson were top 10 rated LBs (Campbell was N1 edge) in their classes. And there are currently rumors that Lawson might be coming back.

Lawson was N3 in 2021: https://247sports.com/season/2021-football/recruitrankings/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&Position=LB

good catch on lawson. I was thinking 5 star, and usually top 10 guys are 5 or very close so I guess lawson must have just missed that cut even though he was toward the top of the ratings.

I specifically didn't include campbell because he was rated as an edge player, and mostly played on the edge and being the top edge guy doesn't always translate to being a top ILB (and vice versa to be honest).

I read something incredible. The ACC signed no 5* kid this recruiting cycle. The entire league
Clemson finished with the #28 recruiting class , 15 players, and without the transfer portal, they will experience a talent issue in coming years . Things don’t look great for the ACC in the coming years.

As long as anyone (school) has the money they can just buy a roster now…Either the current Clemson regime buys into the new way of life/business in CFB or they wont be around along. I hate it…but that’s what it is.

Real sad when you consider Clemps had and continues to milk the first cash cow collective, IPTAY
