Sports columnist, author John Feinstein dies at age 69 - ESPN

John Feinstein, whose career as a columnist and bestselling author of sports books made him one of the most notable sportswriters of his time, died Thursday, his brother told The Washington Post. He was 69.

Feinstein was a regular sports columnist for the Post but began his career as a night police reporter in 1977. He was most widely known for his coverage of college basketball, but wrote about all sports, including golf, college football and the Olympics. He wrote for Golf Digest and was a frequent contributor to a variety of radio programs, with a regular stint on National Public Radio.

His name was among the candidates to be considered for vice president under Bush 41. He was a longtime friend of Bush, but he didn’t want the job. In fact, he didn’t want it so badly that he went onto one of the Sunday morning shows and said taxes were going to have to be increased, spending was going to have to be reduced, and he was pro choice on a abortion which was a litmus test that was going to disqualify him.

One of my fellow soldiers knew him quite well and really spoke well of him.

Yeah he seemed like the real deal.
