When friends and colleagues who are close to our age start dying, our entire perception of life and death changes greatly. We're all mortal...I would normally not do this, but when the shocking death of someone you worked with you discover in a foreign country because it is in USA today, that’s kind of a big deal.

Avalanche kills 36-year-old skier, injures another near Jackson, Wyoming

On December 24, I worked my last shift in the lab at Wyoming and this guy was the nurse in the ER. Just 11 days later, and he’s gone, the victim of the avalanche in Wyoming.
And he was an experienced outdoorsman who trained others, and he was one of the good guys. Everyone is in shock over this. And then I see it made a Pittsburgh paper as well.
