I heard this from an "insider" (and I use that term very loosely) on another board this afternoon and didn't buy it. But now it seems he may have been on to something - The Mainboard

The-Mainboard.com has learned this evening that

DE William Gholston is leaning heavily toward reneging on his long standing commitment to Michigan State, and committing to Alabama. Gholston, who Scout.com rates as the ninth best DE in the country has been committed to the Spartans since June 16th, 2009, but two different sources tell us you can go ahead and wipe him off the Spartans commit list. The 6'7 240 pound Gholston was an All-State and All-City selection following his Junior season in which he made 101 tackles, 15 QB sacks, 22 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles in 12 games.
The "insider" also said that Gholston and Hankins will be visting Alabama on Jan 15th.

Oh and by the way, he's a five star on scout. http://alabama.scout.com/a.z?s=14&p=8&c=1&nid=3751365

This seems to have been kicked around a month or so ago but after Hubbard commited I figured it was because Gholston was completely out of the mix. Now it's picking up steam again.

It goes without saying that he'd be a great pickup. How possible is that both he and Hankins end up in T-town? What does the rest of the class look like if that happens? I also read on the Main Board that if Bama does get these two, it puts them in good position for Lawrence Thomas, a 6'4", 232lb ILB from Detroit in 2011.

If this holds any water, you have to think Ingram's and the Tide's success this year is playing a factor in these guys from Michigan.

I thought we just picked a guy just like him in hubbard. can't have too many good d-line men. Maybe hubbard will play the jack position. Anyway Mr. Gholston, come on down, join the fun. I know it's hard to leave home but Ingram did it and he's playing for the big crystal football. At least come by T-town for a visit.

You can never have too much pass rush. Outside of Dareus, our pass rush from DL this year was not dominant. If we get that, our defense will be truly scary.

Okay here's what I can gather so far with this situation. We have really turned the heat up on Jonathon Hankins and he is warming up to the idea of replacing Cody. He is extremely quick off the ball and at about 6'4" 325 lbs. our staff feels he is the only nose guard right now worth using a scholarship on. Gholston has always liked Alabama and loved Bobby Williams. It has been said that if Gholston did leave the state of Michigan he would end up at Alabama. With Hankins interest in the Tide apparently Gholston may be re-thinking his decision. Hankins is scheduled to visit January 15th and Gholston may come with him. But on the other side he told a Michigan State site not 4 days ago he was taking no more visits and "is a man of his word." Take this for what its worth as we all know how kids can be. But he has been very elusive lately about talking to analysts and no one really knows what to make of these latest developments although that same analyst who talked to him 4 days ago said this morning he is "120% solid, trust me." This one will be interesting to follow especially with the Hankins situation.

And for those wondering about where all these monsters would play, no worries. Alfy can play SAM is necessary. Adrian will play Jack or POSSIBLY grow to play DE. But CNS has openly compared Adrian to Jason Taylor and Gholston is generally considered to be the top Jack LB type player in the country. This is a fantastic problem to have and should be fun to watch. RTR.

Great to see us making recruiting inroads in to some of these blue states like Michigan and Ohio(Mike Marrow). As a previous poster mentioned, the whole Mark Ingram story will hopefully have a domino effect and we'll now have access to players that otherwise we would never have been able to get in on.

The thought of having not just 1, but 2 6'7" pass rushing phenoms on the same defense sure gets of excited! You know, it's hard to imagine this team being any better than it is now, but looking at the talent CNS continues to bring in, its hard to imagine it NOT being better!

Here's another William Gholston snippet dated 12/25:

"MSU loses end Trevor Anderson, so Drone will be among several players vying for snaps at that spot. MSU will return Colin Neely, Tyler Hoover and David Rolf, and it brings in three ends in the 2010 class - William Gholston, Marcus Rush and Taylor Calero.

Gholston, the jewel of the class, has said he will consider visiting other schools, but he was in East Lansing last Saturday - decked in MSU gear at the MSU- IPFW basketball game, sitting with MSU coach Mark Dantonio, Narduzzi and All-America linebacker Greg Jones.

If we can get Gholston and Hankins the rest of our class should fall in place. Man this class is gettin' scary good and i think it will bring a third straight recruiting title. Don't it feel good fellas!!!!?:BigA:

:BigA:Whats that old saying? It dont get no beteer than this!!!!!!:BigA::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

This is really starting to pick up some steam. It's on all the Michigan State boards.

Yes, it is; I have said before that I have a lot of football friends up there in Spartan country; they tell me that they think Gholston will be coming to Bama.

A lot of people are upset. The last time I saw this kind of reaction was last year when the Ingram rumors started gaining momentum. I sure hope that this turns out the same way.

The people I talk to tell me this guy can flat out play. These same people told me that Ingram was the most underrated RB in country; way before he committed to Bama. I will be watching this one closely. :)

I wonder with these two if maybe A Hubbard could play TE. He was getting recruited for BBall I believe and was his main sport until this fall.

One could also wonder if Gholston could play tight end. He has in high school although he has been emphasizing defense recently because he apparently seems a more natural fit there.

With only about 5 spots left and Kouandjio, Stone, Moseley, Dunkley, Fulton, Gholston, Hankins and even Dixon, Hicks and Lemonier on our board, things are going to get interesting.

There is an article on Crimson Confidential today about Gholston's interest in the Tide. But I don't have subscription.
