I was asleep at the switch yesterday, but this battle marked the high water mark for the Germans in World War II. After Stalingrad, the German forces were almost always retreating towards Berlin. Unbelievably savage fighting in arguably the largest battle in history. 600,000 men lost killed or captured by the Axis, 1.1 million KWC by the Soviets.
The Red Army counterattacked on 19 November 1942, surrounding the 6th Army in Stalingrad and squeezed the Germans. By the end of January, the Stalingrad pocket had been cut in two. One pocket surrendered 31 January 1943, the other 2 February 1943.
Of course, Putin jumped out in front of the parade.
Soviet victory monument near Volgagrad.
The Russians do like subtle when it comes to monuments.
