Initial league propaganda indicated they were going to play on campus at the various universities. All the other leagues played (and failed) at Legion Field. What changed?

Re: What has happened to teh AAFL?

I wonder what the mascot will be this time?

What all has there been?

Fire

Stallions

Thunderbolts

Barracudas

Vulcans

Those are the only ones I can think of.

I would personally like to see it be something like...The Alabama, Yellowhammers...nah...they'd never go for that. Whatever it is, I want to get the shirt before they ride off into obscurity with the others.

My favorite. The first one:

We went to several of their games in the early '70s, when I was in grade school. They became the "Vulcans."

I think the reasoning for choosing Legion Field as opposed to Tuscaloosa is that they are trying to take advantage of both Alabama and Auburn fan bases. If it was played in Tuscaloosa then only the Alabama fan base would be interested and vice versa for Auburn. However, if they stock the team full of Bama and Auburn players and put it in Birmingham then theoretically both fan bases will be interested and come to the games.

If the team truly is stocked with Bama players that have not made it in the NFL for whatever reason then I will be interested. Freddie Roach, Freddie Milons, Tyler Watts, Santonio Beard, and obviously a whole host of other players who were great at Bama, but just couldn't cut it in the NFL. However, if it is full of players that nobody remembers or players from other colleges then it will fail miserably. There has to be name recognition on the team like Jay Barker playing for the Thunderbolts. I think the Thunderbolts had the highest attendance of any of the XFL teams.

They have to be smart and never try to compete with the NFL and attract players that the region around the team knows. That is the only way it has the slightest chance of being successful.

If they were truly interested in fan bases, they would play their games at both JH and BD, stocking their team with Bama-Auburn ex-stars. Choosing Legion Field makes success dependent on the Birmingham football crowd, and we know how supportive they have been recently. LF is not exactly the ideal site to attract large numbers of out-of-town fans.

I will admit that the Vulcans and Memphis Southmen were successful in the 1975 edition of the World Football League. Both teams created lots of fans and money, but the league collapsed under them. I held a Vulcans season ticket and after the collapse Vulcans' management paid off every one of us for the games we would miss. This has been the story of every pro football attempt since, the inability to construct a financially sound league from top to bottom. There have been too many Shreveports and San Antonios in the mix, who fail early and bring down the good teams with them.:conf2:

Re: What has happened to the AAFL?

Its too bad theres no other place for the league to play in Birmingham besides legion field. The hoover met is being used by the Barons most of the spring/summer. Who's taking their family down to legion field to watch these games? Not this guy. I'd watch them if they were on tv, but I doubt they will be.

Re: What has happened to the AAFL?

I know the concept is that America is starved for football, and they're hoping to fill the void, but America is starved for GOOD football, and the good players are in the NFL.

AAFL

I Just Wanted To Get Everyones Take On This New League Starting Up In The Spring. Do U Think It Will Be Something That Will Last And Something That U Could Get Behind?

will you support the AAFL?

just wondering, they are marketing it as an extension of collegiate football, with education requirements and everything. just wondering after all the heartbreak from pro football, would Birmingham support a semi pro team if its tied to the University. seems that every johnny-come-lately pro league includes Birmingham, just to disappear after a few years

Re: will you support the AAFL?

I've supported all of the others since the Stallions( my childhood days). I don't see any reason not to support this one. I just love to watch football, especially since it's 20 minutes from my house. GO....whatever our team name will be!!!!!!!!!:conf2::conf2::conf2:
