The frightening end to me with the current money model is that college football will not exist as a true college sport. My logic is a little out there so bear with me.

My nightmare scenario:

Lets forward to 2028. Really rich guy approaches (insert SEC/Big 10/Big 12 team) and offers to "buy the football program" from a college/athletic department. A billion dollar offer with the college getting an affiliation super large fee every year during the agreement. The college can rid themselves of the NCAA, Title 9, all expenses, etc.. So the future could be like: The Alabama Crimson Tide (affiliated with UA) for the duration of the contract. (While affiliated team can use NIL) Once the contract is up the "team" could shop around for a new "affiliation". So the 2033 Alabama Crimson Tide could be the 2034 Oklahoma Sooners if they get a better arrangement from Oklahoma.

Once the money train is off and running like it now we have lost any facade that these are amateur athletes playing for their school. Biff with his letter sweater and getting a medical degree while playing football is long long gone. So, why do we pretend? Lets be honest, the vast majority of todays college athletes have little or nothing to do with any academics at their college. Why keep this charade up? (mainly because everyone involved is making money, for now).

The future will do what is does and the earth will keep spinning. Saban is telling us something. Last I checked he is the smartest person in the room.

Reece Davis just had a sit down with him. The gist is that Coach felt worn down this year and didn't feel like he could give it 100%. He also said he couldn't be honest with recruits and tell them that he would be there until they graduated and he didn't like that.

I think multiple things can be true right now.

I think it’s very likely that concern for his and Ms Terry’s health were priority #1. It’s likely the stress of coaching at this level at his age were weighing on his health more than he’s shown.

I think it’s also very likely that the current state of college football was a factor as well. Coach Saban was at heart a player’s coach, He wants to develop his athletes both as players and as individuals. College football is quickly becoming less of a relationship game and more of a short-term free agency. I’m sure that doesn’t sit well with him.

I’m sure it’s also true that if the grind of this year was proving to be too much, coach probably looked at the changing landscape of the conference and playoffs and knew next year would be even more of a grind. I haven’t heard him admit it, but I have to assume that was a factor.

One thing I can guarantee though, even having no insight on their decision. This wasn’t a decision made based on knee-jerk emotion. It was calculated and likely very layered. I’m positive there was no one individual reason that the timing felt right. In his mind it was just the right time.

Probably a few other things made the season stressful for him. First, the QB situation. I think he may have doubted for quite a while if we enough talent at QB to get to the playoff. Also losing to Texas early put us in a situation with no margin for error for most of the season.

I'm probably going to get torched for this, but if QB development was a stressor, then the coaching staff should have solidified the starter prior to the season's start and built an offense for Week 1 that the selected QB could comfortably run. Whether due to player inability or coaches refusing to, none of that happened and we were in a worse spot for it.

Seems obvious from the comments provided by Chris Low’s sources that Saban is disgusted with the current state of the game. While I agree, I hate to see it run him off. I think he stays another 2-3 seasons if things were the same. It’s a lawless world out there now.
Probably a combination of things.

That said.................

I HOPE YA'LL WHO WERE PUSHING THE PLAYERS TO GET PAID ARE HAPPY NOW!

You can literally see why. I use to be a huge college football fan. Growing up and watching it, the pageantry, the love and hatred, it was great. The NIL and portal stuff is for the birds. I didn’t want college football to go the way of the NFL. I understand the NFL, but this stuff is ridiculous. NIL is dumb. It has been treated incorrectly and then alignment too? It’s not ever gonna be the same. I just hope whoever comes next can deal with it. Right now though, it’s just stupid and I kinda don’t blame coach.

Josh Pate said last night that he’s been told off the record by multiple coaches that they are ready to call it quits because of the state of the game. Said he’s heard horror stories of recruits shaking down the coach for money.
You beat me to it. To state the painfully obvious, it`s totally out of control. I`ve wondered all along how long and how much of this B___Shi_ CNS would be willing to stand to keep going in the game he loves. Guess we`ve got a read on that now!!
I don`t doubt for a minute that what Josh said is accurate.

We as fans hate what this is doing to the game, can you even imagine being a head coach and dealing with this nonsense? Honestly what coach out there is like "ya! now this is the stuff!" Aside from maybe Freeze

Yep, I really think the NIL/portal mess is why Coach retired.
AND.... I also think because he couldn't handle paid players the way he wanted to is why he left the NFL.
I have enjoyed college football and especially Alabama football since the 1960's..... I have NEVER seen an Alabama team play this crummy and still win games. That is enough to give any coach an ulcer.
