New Smyrna Beach city leaders are considering a new fire assessment fee as they prepare for the potential loss of millions of dollars in property tax revenue if a proposed statewide constitutional amendment is approved by voters in November.The proposal was discussed during a City Commission workshop Tuesday. According to city officials, New Smyrna Beach could lose about $4.5 million in property tax revenue in 2028 alone if the amendment passes with the required 60% voter approval. The city estimates it could lose nearly $13 million over the first two years.
To help offset those losses, city officials are proposing a fire assessment fee for property owners. Under the proposal, homeowners with residences larger than 2,100 square feet would pay about $100 annually at first. The fee would increase by 25% each year through 2030, reaching about $426 annually.
The city estimates the assessment would generate approximately $2.5 million in its first year and about $10.2 million annually by 2030.

Two 18-year-olds were arrested Saturday after a video captured them driving a lawn mower into a Target store, damaging the doors.
Two teenagers were arrested Saturday after video showed one of them driving a lawn mower inside a Target store, according to the Ocala Police Department.
Police said 18-year-old Janek Szkaradek arrived at the Target store, unloaded a lawn mower from a trailer, and drove it through the doors of the store, damaging them as he drove through. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Luke Charske recorded a video and posted it to social media.
“The last thing you expect to see inside a Target is a lawn mower coming through the door,” said Vanessa Scarlett, a witness.
Scarlett said she was inside the store when she began recording the incident as it unfolded.
“He actually drove straight into the door first and shattered it. It was quite interesting,” Scarlett said.
Scarlett, who said she did not know either teen, said she started recording after realizing what was happening.
Police said the damage is still visible at the store, where wood boards and broken glass now cover the damaged entrance.
Investigators said the incident did not start at Target. The night before, Szkaradek allegedly used a leaf blower inside a Culver’s.
Police said Szkaradek was charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. Both Szkaradek and Charske were arrested in connection with the Target incident and charged with disorderly conduct. Charske was charged as a principal to disorderly conduct for his role in recording the stunt.
“I think they are teenagers that definitely got the consequence that a lot of people think they deserved. But I also think to give them some grace because they are teenage boys,” Scarlett said.
"These actions endangered people and caused property damage," said a spokesperson for the Ocala Police Department. "They are crimes, not harmless videos."
"Think before you record. It's not worth an arrest and a criminal charge," Ocala police said.
According to jail records, both Szkaradek and Charske were released on Sunday.

I have a soft spot for Lakeland. Years ago, when my stepson was living in Davenport and working at Epcot, I was helping them by hanging a ceiling fan in their cathedral ceiling bedroom. I had to have a part made. Naturally, I looked in the met Orlando area. Nada. Disney, at the time, did their own machining or had captive subs. I looked west and there were two in Lakeland, open until noon on that Saturday. I called and drove down. They stayed open late and the machinist let me hang over his shoulder as he fashioned the part o the vertical mill, so it was just right...Florida Poly is going to develop it's athletic program starting with Basketball!

I have a fond memory too.
5 years ago (next month) I bought a motorcycle from a Lakeland seller. Drove over and brought it back in my truck.
The seller was young and taught flying. Said he was moving to a place where they didn't have room for the bike.
One of the few German motorcycles I have and I actually enjoy riding it more than any of my others.
BMW only made this model 1 year, too, so that adds to it's 'collectability'.
