The Tide clawed back from a seventh-inning deficit to force extras but could not come out on top

4/3/2021

TUSCALOOSA, AL – A wild, extra-innings game between Alabama and sixth-ranked Tennessee finished in favor of the Volunteers, 8-4, on Saturday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The series is now even at one game apiece with the loss moving the Crimson Tide to 16-10 on the season, including a 2-6 mark in SEC play.

Alabama was first on the board thanks to a solo home run from William Hamiter in the fourth. The Tide held the lead until the top of the seventh when Tennessee posted a four-spot to take the lead. Alabama answered with one in the home half of the seventh before tying things up in the bottom of the eighth with two runs. Both teams were unable to score in the ninth, sending it to extras.

The two squads went scoreless in the 10th before the Vols used two hits and three walks to bring in four runs in the 11th. Alabama was unable to match Tennessee in the home half to make it a 1-1 series heading to Sunday. Camden Sewell (1-0) picked up the win in his relief outing for the Vols while Crimson Tide reliever Grayson Hitt (1-2) suffered the loss.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Our kids competed really well in what was a great college baseball game. Tennessee had an inning where they didn't defend very well, and we had two innings where we couldn't throw a strike. But, our kids competed really well, and we'll have to do the same tomorrow to get a series win over a good Tennessee team."

How It Happened
  • B4 | William Hamiter recorded his first career home run with a solo shot to right. (1-0, Alabama)
  • T7 | The Volunteers led off the seventh with a triple and a walk before an errant throw on a pickoff attempt in the next at-bat allowed the tying run to cross. A pair of walks then loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly gave the Vols the lead. After another walk loaded them up again, Connor Pavolony singled to center to bring in two more. (4-1, Tennessee)
  • B7 | T.J. Reeves drew a one-out walk. A pair of errors in the next two at-bats then allowed him to come across and score, narrowing the gap to two. (4-2, Tennessee)
  • B8 | Hamiter began the inning with a hit-by-pitch to force a UT pitching change. The new Tennessee arm was greeted with a single from Zane Denton to put two on for the Tide. After a popup for out No. 1, Drew Williamson singled to left-center to score Hamiter and move Denton to third. Another Volunteer pitching change followed, and, one-out later, Andrew Pinckney tied things up with an infield single. (4-4)
  • T11 | Tennessee drew three walks and notched two hits on the way to four runs to clinch the Saturday game. (8-4, Tennessee)
Postgame Notes
  • Dylan Smith struck out five batters in tonight's outing and has now struck out five-or-more batters in all seven of his starts this season.
  • Chase Lee has now made nine consecutive scoreless appearances totaling 17.0 innings dating back to Feb. 20. Both totals are season-high marks by any Tide reliever.
  • Alabama has homered in six of eight SEC games, totaling 14 home runs across those six matchups.
  • With his 1-for-5 night, Peyton Wilson extended his hitting streak to six games. Across that stretch, the sophomore is batting .500 (14-28) with two doubles, a triple and two home runs to go with five RBI, four runs scored and three stolen bases.
  • ATTENDANCE: 1,764 (SELLOUT)
The two teams will square off on Easter Sunday at The Joe for the rubber match of the series. Alabama calls on junior right-hander Connor Shamblin for the start while Tennessee counters with freshman Blade Tidwell, also a righty. Game three of the weekend can be seen nationally on SEC Network.
