Yeah...my brain is gone. However, there was some bad blood between the two schools...didn't they accuse Bama of playing too hard or something???
Yeah, IIRC the Chick Graning episode was what set it all off.........he was mad at Holt, then Holt went to visit him and they made peace...... Years later I read an article about it where he seemed to be saying he was still mad and Holt was a dirty player

You can thank Furman Bisher for a lot of that.....he hated Coach Bryant

I grew up in shadow of Tech, saw many games. Special games were the Freshman games played on Thansgiving Day between Tech and UGA- Shriners Hospital sponsered the "Strong Legs Run so Weak Legs Walk". Became a Bama fan in early 60's. Styrong emotions came about due to Chick Grannings/Darwin Holt incident. The Post Mag story was about Coach Bryant and Wally Butts 'throwing game".

And remember, Ga Tech was the school where Bobby Dodd coached -- when he and CPB were accused of fixing the game by a reporter who somehow tapped their phones. (Selma can add the details...LOL.) CPB won the lawsuit, but the whole affair left a really bad taste between the schools.
At that time this was major -- I cannot imagine how this would have played out in today's social media driven world.

I think why you're conflating UGA and Tech is because the root problem of the whole thing, Furman Bisher, was good friends with Tech coach Bobby Dodd. I'm absolutely convinced that it was anger over Bryant owning Dodd that caused that story.

Btw - my brother is a news producer with a Journalism emphasis in college, and he says there are two cases EVERY college student has to know about for libel law: 1) the Bryant case; 2) the Carol Burnett case vs the Enquirer. As he said, they discuss it in class, and it's fascinating how obvious the flaws in the reporting were in retrospect.

I agree with you about Bisher....... he liked to take shots at Bama, and when Bama beat Tech he fumed and whined like a little school girl....... I disliked him. Lewis Grizzard on the other hand, was a huge fan of Coach Bryant, even though he was UGA all the way

Yes - and Bisher gave Grizzard his start in the newspaper business.

Bisher's spending on his spring training exploits was legendary.

Sometime maybe around 1974 or so, a guy named Reg Murphy (Atlanta Constitution) was kidnapped and held for ransom. The paper came up with $700,000 to buy his freedom, and another editor named James Minter (who was a bit of a smart mouth) was involved in that whole deal. When Minter was asked off the record by a reporter what it felt like to have $700,000 in his possession, he said, "I felt like Furman Bisher on my way to spring training."

Bisher got to see what his work did when Coach Bryant took the Saturday Evening Post to the woodshed

Well, there's always been a big hub-bub about Bisher's level of involvement in that, but I'd point out that Bisher ain't the one who made the determination to print the story in TSEP, either. No responsible editor would have run that story. I'm fine with blaming Bisher for him letting his feelings get the best of him regarding Coach Bryant, but it's not like he ran that story himself.

No, you are correct...……….and Bisher , iirc, didn't really suffer any financial loss from the story, but it did put a lick on his reputation with all but the most dedicated of true believers.................even many UGA fans were furious at him for implicating Butts in any wrongdoing

It will be interesting to see if these actually get played this time. Georgia Tech backed out of them last time.
Series has been postponed twice. The first time is what started Bama's Neutral Site game, uh...madness for lack of a better term. Alabama had the ideal 3 year format (H/H/NS) in place when GT asked out of the 2013-14 H/H series. 2015 was open for a NS game. When GT asked out of the series it just so happened that the Atlanta Sports Council (of which I was a member of at the time) had a tentative agreement with USC to play in either the 2013 or 2014 game and their prefered opponent was Bama. When the GT series was cancelled, Gary Stokan (then President of the ASC) immediately began negotiations with Bama for 2013-14. When Carroll left USC, Kiffin wanted no part of Bama so the tentative agreement was terminated. Bama wound up being contracted for both 2013 and 2014.

After those games and the 2015 NS game with Wisconsin, Saban decided he prefered the NS games and to keep his friendship with Dantonio opted for NS games in 2016 and 2017 instead of the H/H with Michigan State. Orlando and Atlanta soured that when they were able to come up with no better opposition than Louisville and Duke in 2018 and 2019. So here we are back to scheduling nothing but H/H games after the already contracted neutral site games of 2020 and 2021..
