But I stuck with it, was briefly rewarded through the Stallings years, which I actually did not appreciate at the time as much as I should have, in light of things to come. But I am not the only fan who says they don't think they can watch another year with Jalen doing what he does (discounting the wins, which we obviously do like).
It very nearly happened the previous year though... I also still firmly believe Alabama could have won with Hurts, but concede the steps needed to do that might not have been best for the program. Hurts had a OC that literally didn't know some of the plays needed so yeah, that marriage was never going to work for sure.
But, the main point I was making is that for Hurts faults, and he fell below my expectations at the latter part of the year, he was far from the worst we've had to endure. Even Cooper Bateman was worse both as a runner and downfield passer. Barnett might be a better passer, but he's on his third team because he lacks other important characteristics. So, while I do sympathize with the frustration, I think the whole I can't endure to watch this is a bit of hyperbole. Most fanbases would have loved to endure the same exact thing.
I'm not trying to personally insult you when I say this, but that comes off as spoiled to me. If Tua wasn't there, odds are Hurts would still be the guy, and Alabama would still have a shot at a championship. May be not the best one, but I was prepared to face a season with Bateman as QB, I dealt with JPW as QB alright, and I honestly am a pit puzzled why people who tolerated the type of things ok just couldn't stand the thought of Hurts at QB. Yes, Hurts has his fault, but sometimes it comes off like he did something personal to some people or something.

I care what the offense looks like even if we are winning. And I think last year is evidence that the players and recruits care too.

And this is a large reason why I said what I said. Krazy isn't pleased with me saying it, but I don't think I am wrong to think what I do on this topic. It is hard to me to question anything Saban decides, because the man in the best ever. But I do think the Win Now approach hurt us in a lot of ways despite the fact that we were, in fact, doing exactly that. Recruiting and having our best young talent leave because our QB wasn't able to get them to ball effectively could have caused a lot of damage down the line.
I believe that last 30 minutes of the Tua led offense changed ALOT. Without it we don't win the NC and we probably lose Tua and possibly some young receiver talent. And, I also wonder if our recruiting would be taking off now, like it is.
I personally like Jalen and appreciate his contributions to the program, but if Tua is healthy, I can't see him not being the guy without Jalen making epic improvment, which at this point seems improbable.
First, like the kicking struggles, I understand the frustration. Hurts went off the rails instead of building on what he'd accomplished thus far. It wasn't a good scenario, and even when Hurts was at his best, I knew that talent-wise Tua might eclipse him. I never discounted Tua giving him a run for the job at some point. I also was here calling for a QB change at halftime myself. So don't get me wrong, I understand some of the frustration.
However, like the kicking situation, it was what it was and when a team is good at 90% of the things it does, there's an almost inevitable struggle in some areas. Alabama's offense scored fairly well, protected the ball well, but struggled in other areas. To give an example though, last year Alabama's scoring offense was 15th. That's pretty good, but could have been better. LSU was 76th with something like 11 less points per game! Now, LSU has every bit the talent Alabama has. They are loaded, they recruit well, their team is producing NFL talent at a high rates. They have a problem at QB. They have a problem on offense. This problem has persisted for years. To hear some people talk about the situation at Alabama, I'd almost think it was LSU they were talking about. Even at that, LSU fans arn't on suicide watch or anything. So that's more along the lines of my point, I get it, there were problems. Hurts got worse when he should have gotten better. That's no good, I got you there. But it just wasn't that bad...

Pretty good and not that bad may be acceptable at other schools, but this is Alabama and that just doesn't cut it. Alabama's goal is perfection! If that puts a psychological burden on some then they might want to become a fan of another team.
All the other QBs you mention, or allude to, didn't have a far superior option on the bench.
The biggest problem seems clear to me. Jalen Hurts wants to be something that I just don't think he can ever be; he wants to be a drop back passer and play QB in the NFL. I don't see that happening just like most. Apparently, we may have told him that we would develop him into a drop back passer, and we have tried. I think this has hurt his game as a college QB. If we simply played him like an RPO QB and committed to running the ball like crazy and having the pass plays where there were only one or two options that always seem to be open when teams really commit to running the RPO, he would be a very good college QB. He is still a very good college player that almost any team in America would love to have. We THINK Tua can be a great drop back passer who also has the ability to run on occasion; however, Tua has also shown some shaky moments in the games in which he has played. Now, I'm just guessing here, but I'm thinking that he may also have shown some shaky moments in practice and that is why the best coach in the college game today (and perhaps of all time) decided that Jalen should still be playing. I've noticed Jalen's limitations from very early, and at this point I would think that Tua should be starting. My main point is always that the only opinion that matters on who should be starting is Coach Saban's. Those of you who think you know more than he knows or who worry about prima dona wide receivers having a mutiny, I just can't understand how you would suddenly boo or decide not to watch because you think the back-up is better than the starter. It's an old saying that the most popular player on the team at Alabama is the back-up QB, so this isn't a new situation. As far as the booing goes, Gene Stallings always had a great saying about that. He said, "As soon as you start listening to the fans, it won't be long until you are sitting up there with them," or something to that effect. Anyway, I enjoy the conversation and debate during the off-season and only hope that people don't take it personally when people offer differing opinions. We're all on the same team, so don't have any mutinies here.

I think Tua should start but I've never said I know more than CNS.
And, no matter who starts, I'll be watching and I won't be booing.
BamaHammer has an article called something like "There is no viable reason Tua shouldn't start" and I think that's basically where I am. Unless there is something pretty big that we don't know about then I don't see a reason to start anyone but Tua(assuming he's healthy).
If Saban makes a different decision then I'll have to assume we don't know the whole story. But, I have a seriously hard time believing Tua isn't the clear starter by the time the season starts or at the very very very very least the clear starter by the end of the Louisville game.

Maybe it's just semantics, but I don't think Hurts got worse as much as Kiffin covered his weakness much better than Daboll.
Hurts never showed improvement as a pocket passer, but Kiffin rarely asked him to do it so it was somewhat hidden from our view. When Daboll exposed this weakness, it wasn't that he got worse, but he just wasn't able to do what Kiffin never asked him to do.
Perhaps another way of looking at it is we gave Jalen a pass (no pun intended) at being a pocket passer and we just figured he might develop, but that just didn't happen.
Bottom line, he's basically what he was when he got here as a pocket passer. He's basically a one read then tuck and run QB.
I just read on facebook and al.com that BAMA added a QB today who is moving to Tuscaloosa this weekend. A 3 star who had committed to Arkansas State but never signed papers. Layne Hatcher, a freshman.
That will be great to have 4 scholarship QB's on the roster now for practice purposes, unless this means Jalen may transfer soon??

My first thought, but we are probably just a little jumpy concerning the situation.
The new QB recruit played at the same high school as the #1 TE in the nation for the 2019 class. This could be something other than backup if someone transfers.
Coach Saban wanted to see improvement in Jalen's down field throwing and the only way you do it is let him do it in games. Daboll tried to run plays that would improve that but it never materialized. If Daboll would have done the same as Kiffin he would not have been following orders or help Jalen's development.
I agree. CNS needed to see if Jalen could get us back to where I think CNS wants to go and he couldn't. I didn't mean to suggests Daboll "exposed" him on purpose, but that it was the scheme we were running and Jalen just isn't that type of QB.
