Game Thread: Alabama @ TAMU

It is my understanding Bama would owe Avery over $9 million if was let go this year. Doubt that is going to happen.
Having watched Avery coach in Dallas, things won’t change/work with him leading the show. Therefore, is it smart to put off the inevitable another year OR, do we make the move now? I’d hate to be Byrne b/c if he makes the move, he has to be sure he can get a big name coach. Not sure one is out there at this time. Would a Greg Marshall leave Wichita? Doubtful at best.... Would Chris Mack leave Xavier? Again, why would he to coach BAMA? Kentucky, or Florida, YES! BAMA, no...

Then again, keeping the status quo means we are that much further removed from our last tournament bid! I know we’ve recruited much better under CAJ, just at a loss for why it doesn’t show up on the court! Frustrating but, all we can do is say ROLL TIDE and support the guys!

Petty is beyond over rated. We should have know- came from the same over hyped coach in Huntsville as Trevor Lacey.
I believe he deserves to see what happens with the talent he's recruited. Either the talent isn't what we thought OR they underperformed. I say it's the latter and youth got the best of us this year. If the PG he's recruited is a better floor general than Sexton, this team ought to be better next year.

Speaking of Sexton, I've said it before and I'll say it again. I just don't see him being a very good pro. His motor is NBAish but everything else about his game as a point guard I believe is lacking. I don't think he's a very good passer and doesn't set up other players with decent looks. If he's a lottory pick then good for him, but I don't really think he elevated the players around him. Too much of a one man show IMO.

Petty has shown flashes of brilliance at times, and looked like a below average HS player at times. I can’t disagree with anyone who says he is overrated. However, we need to remember he is a true freshman. It took Donta Hall a couple of years to become the player we thought he could be. Hall looked like an all-SEC player this year.

Avery has to have results next year. Ingram doesn’t have the raw talent as Sexton but, he can be a solid PG. I’m hoping Key’s step back was due to the injury he suffered and he comes back to form next year. If Hall takes another step forward he could be one of the best big men in the SEC. No reason to think Petty won’t improve in year 2 if he listens and puts in the effort.

Add in AJ Jr, Herb Jones, Alex Reese, and the transfer from Texas, we have an 8 man rotation that is workable. Don’t know what happened to Giddens yesterday but, if he gets it together, he an Hall could be a matchup nightmare.

Someone said earlier in the thread that he isn't sold on Sexton in the NBA . . I wonder about it, too. He's gonna need to shoot MUCH better. Relying on slashing to the basket will not sustain a career in the Association.

Posted the numbers in another thread, but Petty has better numbers this year than Josh Langford had last year in his first year at Michigan State. Langford was ranked higher than Petty, too.

There are 14 lottery picks each year. Of the 12 not injured from last year’s draft, the average is 10.3 points per game. I think Collin will be fine.

Yes, that lineup should be a good place to start. We also get Butler, the 6-2 point guard; Fleming, the 6-9 center, and Wood, the 6-4 shooting guard to mix in with the returning guys. That gives us more depth on the perimeter and in the post. Who knows, one or more of those guys may break into the starting lineup and really help us. If either of the perimeter guys can knock down a shot, I would say they would have a very good chance to play a lot. We still need shooters in a big way. I still wish Shaffer would get a chance when teams go zone against us because that dude can shoot it.

The dude is the safest possible lottery pick at PG. He'll be a top ten pick easy.

I said it. Could be wrong and I certainly wish him success.

I don't watch much NBA and earlier in the year some listed the reason he's taylor made for the league and could be more effective than in college.

I'm sure he'll collect some cheap, easy points with his speed and athleticism, but he doesn't play like a point guard IMO. He doesn't distribute the ball well. He's not a great passer and lots of his passes are hard to catch for big men. I don't think he runs the break well and dishes effectively, as a PG should. His outside shot isn't very good, barely average and he almost refuses to take a pull up jumper that almost always available to someone with his quickness off the dribble.

Hey, other than that, I think he's great.

Hope the new PG is ready to go! Anxious to see if he can bring some cohesiveness to the offense and be a better floor general than Sexton.

I know he's a pretty amazing athlete, but IMO, he didn't make the people around him better.

My hope for Petty is he works his butt off to become a better shooter, especially the midrange jumper. Also, he's got to get much better putting the ball on the floor!

With these new guys and the maturity of the young ones from this year being a year older, I think next year could be a pleasant surprise.

Had to be injury or discipline...

I hope it was an injury b/c IIRC Giddens left OSU b/c he had issues/was in the dog house. No reason Giddens can’t add about 15-20 pounds of muscle to his 6-11 frame and be a beast on D and the boards.

I guess he has us riding the coattails of the SEC, which is widely regarded this year.

There's so many factors going into these decisions we must have a favorable combination of several

Much more talent in East Lansing than in Tuscaloosa. I will bet Petty took a ton more shots this year at Alabama than Langford did his freshman year.

Avery was asked today for the explanation he was given for Sexton’s technical foul. He said he had no comment. Really curious what he was told then.

Shouldn't have come down to that, but that call put the game out of reach...
