Game Thread: Alabama-Villanova (NCAA Tournament Round 2)

How can you not know white guy is gonna play for the last shot as a 3 and defend him for that very scenario? I mean if you play him tight and don’t let him get a clean shot off it increases his shot difficulty or makes him take another step and try to drive stepping inside the line for a 2. Ugh!!!!
We would've been better off to run up and foul him. Put him on the line and even if he hits both, Bama gets the last shot. Worst case- we're down 4 instead of 5. Best case, we're down 1 or 2. Easy for to me to say from my couch, of course.

On the blocking call....wasn't Key's feet still moving when he was hit?

Isn't that what defines whether it's a charge or a block?

Just asking.....not trying to create any friction.

It wasn't nearly as "clear" as some are making it. It's say it would be called 50-50 most times.

Yes, he was dragging his left foot. Not fully into position

He was still in defensive position. Your feet don’t have to be set, you just have to have defensive position established. He had that. Either way the offensive player can’t lower his shoulder into the defender’s chest. It should have been a charge.

Not always. If you lower your head and shoulder you will still be called for the charge and he did that plus out of control.

One last comment - I would like to see more penetration to the basket and either get points or get fouled. Of course, you gotta make those FTs for this strategy to work....

That is the problem - hit 5 more of those FTs and the game is tied right now.

I disagree with someone who said they aren't a good team. Don't just lose 4 games without being pretty good.

And, they are playing us smart on offense. They are doing a great job of switching or meeting Sexton as he tries to go over the top of our screens. They know our offense flows thru him and they are doing a decent job of controlling him and limiting him getting into the paint to score or dish.

Interesting observation.

I was thinking Collin could use a little more help at times. Is that on the coaching?

This is probably a conversation better suited for a post game thread, but I’ll say it anyways. Part of the problem is more on skill development. Avery has recruited a lot of talent and athleticism, but a lot of the guys come in extremely fundamentally raw. I do think we’ve done a poor job reinforcing fundamental skills, especially in the youngest members of the team.

Screening is definitely a big one, but my bigger concern Is how weak we can be at ball handling. Think about how often we turn the ball over when any of our guys drive. If Jones, or Reese, or even Petty try to take it to the hoop, you can almost predict a turnover coming. Honestly, at times even Sexton and Ingram aren’t much better.

We all know the shooting problems, which also comes back to fundamentals, so that’s not worth going into.

I will give credit where credit is due though. We have gotten significantly better at defensive positioning and pressure defense through the season. Our bigs are also playing like night and day from where they’ve been. So I don’t know that it’s necessarily on Johnson. Sometimes I wonder if we need better position coach focusing on guard fundamentals.

I don’t say any of that to be negative, Just a couple of observations. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Roll Tide!!

I am not one to get on officials in BBall games because the game moves so fast, but in this game there have been a lot of 50/50 calls and it seems that all have gone Nova's way. There have been a lot of no calls on both ends of the court, which I am fine with, but I hope that Alabama starts to get a few more of these 50/50 calls.

This ain’t YMCA ball guys. It ain’t all on the refs. Some are starting to sound like Auburn fans so I am off this board for the game. Y’all have fun
