Andre Smith update

Even if you were a member of the football team, wrongly accused of having contact with an agent, and were at great risk of being ineligible? Only the guilty (or those wishing not to play football) would refuse.

I don't think that's necessarily true but maybe my level of reasoning is higher than yours.

:BigA: It is very clear Andre made a mistake, but you cant take the fact away he helped up have a undefeated season! I hope he can come back for his senior season but you cant blame him for doing what is best for him! I hope he makes better judgements in the future! The idea he was set up keeps going thru my head! He is one of my favorite players and I wish him the best! I appreciate Saban enforcing team rules regardless of who the player is or the outcome of the game! ROLL TIDE!! Godd luck to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl

Time is running out for Andre, regardless of his choice where he will be playing next season. It would be great for him to return and play another year at the Capstone, but he has only two weeks to declare himself for the draft. Assume he decides to remain for one more year and the investigation later reveals he is inelligible, he would have lost his window to go pro. At this point, his hands are tied; he has to declare for the draft to guarantee he plays football somewhere next year.

Something needs to be done about these agents preying on college athletes. The NFL could prevent team owners from negotiating with these rogue agents, even if they make contact via a runner. It would be a simple matter for the league to issue a list of blackballed agents and declare them out of the business. This is not rocket science.
This is an unfortunate situation for a great athlete that will be leaving us with this mess hanging over him. Still, I wish him the best.

I wouldn't let anyone look at my cell phone records, read my mail, read my email or look at my computer history without a court order not because I have anything to hide but because that's my personal stuff. My wife isn't allowed in my billfold and I stay out of her purses too.

I understand where you're coming from. I don't voluntarily pee in a cup for anyone anymore, unless they have an M.D. after their name. Yet I had one job where I had to and chose to sign the waiver giving them full right to hand me a cup because I wanted that particular job. I would think that this is the situation with Andre, tho I could be wrong.

IMHO, the situation of a college player being asked by his Coach to produce his cell phone records would be appropriate even without a signed waiver, especially when it comes to an issue as potentially serious as agent contact.

If Smith returned the Oline could look like,,,,, Smith, Johnson, Massie, Fluker, and the center could be,,,, ME! hahahahaha

You forgot Carpenter, who's coming in expecting to play LT or RT. My guess is that he will. I don't remember if he has two or three to play two, but JUCO OLs are usually recruited to play right away...

I feel bad for Dre because he isn't playing in a BCS bowl before he leaves. For all the hard work he has put in, and coming to Bama when Bama was down & out. He should have been reward with this bowl game, but if he did this with the agent. He deserves the punishment for putting Bama's program in a bad spot. Now if a family member did all this, it's very sad for Dre to go out like this........

I don't think Dre is coming back, and if he does, I will be shock big time......
That kind of money is a very very hard thing to say no too..........

From the story I read a couple of weeks ago, Carpenter is coming in to take Dre's LT spot. At least, that's what he has been told by Coach. I think he has 2 years to play 2, but I'm not sure. Where's Lance when we need him???:conf2:

The starting job would be Carpenter's to lose. We should be in pretty good shape next season with or without Andre at LT. If we get someone to replace Caldwell we will be spectacular.

One of the big arguements that Dre is leaving is the big signing bonuses in the nfl going bye bye. I got to say that I think they will find another way to get the top athletes their money. Some other loop hole or under the table kind of an agreement.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told ESPN on Saturday that college underclassmen considering the 2009 draft should not fear a new economic system being in place by 2010. “There will be no change in our current system, at least until 2011,” Goodell told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. “I’ve explained that to some college head coaches, athletics directors and league commissioners. Any underclassman who is hearing differently is probably hearing it from an agent or from another source who is misinformed.”
