Andre Smith update

Unless facts reveal otherwise, Andre should have everyone's support. For years, he has handled the spotlight of being one of the nation's top prep and college players with pure class and a level head. I'm disappointed that his career at Bama will end this way, but I'm sure that Andre and his family are even more disappointed.

I have read or heard nothing to indicate that Andre or his immediate family have intentionally done anything wrong and it's a damn shame that they are being publicly castigated by many knee-jerk fans and some media.

At this point, any blame should be leveled at that runaway cesspool of money known as the NFL.

Rolando McClain's comments from The Birmingham News:

"We'll deal with it as a family," said McClain, who will be a coveted draft-eligible junior next season. "We wish him the best, first and foremost. We're going to miss him. You can't replace Andre Smith, number one. We're going to do everything we can to get ready for Utah. But, I'm not in that situation (to be eligible). I pray to God that I'll be in that situation one day, but we have great compliance guys. They've told us over and over what you need to do and what you should do when agents contact you, so I can just do the smart thing and stay away from them. And then, next year, if I need an agent for some reason, then I'll wait until the appropriate time to have one."

Very insightful, imo.

Ok i am someone who doesn't know very much about the NCAA rules but as i understand it this is only a violation because he took the policy out through the agent correct? If he had simply gone through a private company or the NCAA to get the insurance policy it would have been within the rules correct? I think i remember that Willis McGahee took a similar policy out through a private insurance company right before the fiesta bowl in which he tore up his knee.

This leads to my question, if you want an insurance policy why are you going through an agent and not a legal (if it is legal) private company? Also if he was trying to get an insurance policy what was it for? Just for the bowl game, or for another season?

Just the many questions that i have.

I'm begging all Bama fans, players' families, and players to please immediately beat the hell out of any agent seen within 100 feet of anyone associated with our program unless they have already declared for the draft.

Off topic, yet your last paragraph reminded me and I want to share.

I was watching Senior Bowl practice the year Shaun Alexander played. After practice I see a man in a green suit, surrounded by other men in suits walking toward the field. I recognized him as Johnnie Cochran and was immediately angered that he and his posse dared step foot into MY town! Bile rose as he approached Shaun... I wanted to fly onto the field and tackle him! The spoke briefly then Cochran headed to T Martin and I coulda cared less.

I did join the chorus of boo's and yells of "what about Nicole!?"

play time is over for Andre. For so many years he dreamed of being a big time NFL player and getting the money. Fair nuf, I'm 42, never played college ball, and I STILL dream that dream. But the difference now is that he is there, he's going to have millions and millions of dollars dropped on him and he needs to take control of the people around him, that includes family. When someone hasn't had any real money and they see it close by, they can be overcome with greed and do things to hurt you, or to take advantage of you, and being your blood relative, it won't matter, it will only matter that you have the money and they want it.

So to Andre I would say, take control of your environment NOW. Don't wait. I'm not saying you can't trust anyone, just that you need to figure out who is really on your side and who wants to see what they can get from you.

Unfortunately in this case, his teammates, his coaches, and all the fans are going to pay the price if we lose this game. and if we lose there is no question in my mind it will lay at his feet forever. It may not be fair, but life isn't.

There are plenty of greedy players too, but maybe your "NFL" reference was intended to include them in the cesspool as well.

As we know, being fair is not a high priority with the NCAA. It's better to lose Andre for this game than to let him play (even if the NCAA said it was OK), and six months from now be "staring down the barrel of a gun". The best thing CNS could do is "nip it in the bud" and take no chances with the NCAA. Last time we tangled with them it's taken several years to get over.
I agree.

I had to peek on one of the barn boards (i know, i know). They are already salivating, hoping and praying that because of this we'll have to forfeit the Iron Bowl win. Heck, by tomorrow they may just declare themselves the winners and those poor Goober's trees will suffer again! LOL

The one thing that still stands out to me is that after 15 yrs of recovering from the Langham issue, why would anyone associated with Bama, player or family, ever ever do anything as far as illegal contact with agents ever again. The Langham stupidity started the whole process that eventually ended with Means and us damn near getting the death penalty. Im glad AS wasn't directly involved but how could his family, or anyone else's, be that completely stupid?

One word... GREED

Clearly, some folks--out of their love and respect for Andre--are trying to take all of the blame off his shoulders.

This whole "Andre didn't know a thing" bit simply doesn't wash. Let's be honest with ourselves.

I think clearly some people here including myself just want to wait until the facts are clear to start assessing blame. I guess it's the obsession with being able to say "see I said so first" , "I knew it before everyone else" or the classic "I told you so". If the facts come out and Andre did something wrong we will have an entire off season to point fingers, so why the rush? If it is proven he did you guys can have an "I told you so first" thread.

It's not about "I told you so first;" if it were, I would have posted about the suspension before it became public. The simple fact is that all of the statements coming out, from the coach to the players, indicate that Andre was involved. I don't think he did it intentionally or that he was trying to hurt the team--he's not like that at all. I just think he got caught up in a bad situation. If anyone is to blame, it's the slimy agent. The agent shouldn't have even contacted anyone regarding a player who still had a game to play.

Andre Smith from a financial point of view...

I know this point of view is going to open myself up to flames...But, here goes... :):):):)
I believe Andre Smith will be a top five pick. The NFL top five picks have been getting ~$30 million guranteed.

Playing football is quite risky...Earlier this bowl season, I watched DeAndre Brown have his leg snapped in two. DeAndre Brown coming out of high school was considered a future NFL player & now well...he will probably walk with a limp for the rest of his life. So, there is that chance that something like that could happen to Andre Smith...If that happenned that is the end of the big $$$$. He is so close to the big payoff...is it really worth the risk at this point?

So, my opininon...which my brother-in-law adamently says I am wrong :-)...Maybe, it is best that Andre is not playing the Sugar Bowl. Before, the game he has reached the apex of draft status...What else is there to prove? Really, he has everything to lose (from a montetary aspect) and nothing to gain...

Thus, I am proud of Andre Smith's accomplishments. He gave us a great season & laid the foundation for greater seasons. I know as Bama fans we want him to play & will miss him...But, $30 million is a big bet to lay on the table to risk, even though the odds are slim for a career ending injury.

From the bits and pieces I have gathered some have told me that Andre didn't do anything but a family member, possibly his uncle or his dad, took out an insurance policy on Andre through an agent before the Bowl game. Another agent who wanted Andre turned them in. I'm not going to say this is etched in stone but I hope it slows down some of the more ignorant posts from last night. I think this has some merit or I wouldn't put it on the message board. There may be some more updates when we find out more, if we find out more but please lets not keep speculating and twisting this story into something more ugly than it already is. Thanks and Roll Tide.

On the PF show paul just said he has been told from a reliable source that Bama has been cleared from any NCAA or SEC investigations.

i know this inst set in stone but for the first time since i heard the news my heart is beating normally. i just hope there will be no punishment on the U of A. anyway, lets get those BIG NASTIES ready for a fight!!!:BigA:

I'm with your brother-in-law on this one.:)

Did Andre significantly improve his stock against the Barn. Mississippi State. Should he have just stopped playing halfway through the season? :) :eek2:

Ok TomJones76 I'm not going to pile on you, there are plenty of people on here who will do that for me. What you might be missing is the fact that there are insurance policies available for that and they don't involve agents. That's if you are concerned for him from an injury and loss of income standpoint.

Other than that I can't help you except to say "stop drop and roll" cause the flames are going to get hot.

I think it did...but, the stakes were bigger for Alabama then...Sugar Bowl against Utah?...not the same as competing for NC and SEC Championship. Also, playing against the Barn & MSU led the way to Florida. Which was a great showcase game for him to play in.
