The layman's guide of understanding the CFP. The CFP committee released their final CFP rankings Sunday morning, and Alabama, though ranked No. 11 were the first team out of the 12 team playoffs, and SMU got the final at-large spot with the No. 11 seed.
The Crimson Tide was ranked No. 11, but because of automatic participation trophies (aka automatic qualifiers) as a result of teams winning conference championships, SMU ended up being the last team in as an at-large bid, ranked No. 10. So, you see No. 11 became No. 13 and No. 12 became #No. 10.
