Re: Clowney Decision

Missed a chance to top our 08 class without him. Anyway, our class is great and talented already. in CNS we trust.

Ehh...we didn't want him anyway. ;)
Hey, not so fast. We definitely wanted JC, but you don't get everyone, every year. Coaches made a valient effort and came close. Playing close to home so parents can watch him play is a strong attraction. All we can do it wish him good luck. At least we had him considering us.....only three teams can claim that!

I just don't see where JC was a big need for us. We have 4 good DEs coming in though I'm sure one or 2 will be expected to convert to LB. Yeah, it would have been nice to get him, but no big loss (IMO).

Not surprised, or disappointed. Like others, I feel like Cyrus was the one we needed the most - JC would have just been icing on the cake.Good luck, JC!
I agree. Cyrus hung toe to toe with JC in practices and one on one drills before the UA game. Honestly, to me, if I had to chose, I rather have a strong OT rather than a strong DE. The reason is simple. When you play against a strong DE the offense can design plays away from him/add extra protection etc.. making his impact somewhat minimal. When you have a great OT the offense can draw up plays behind him and if the defense counters by adding extra men to that side you add in some misdirection and go the other way.

Memo: This statement makes zero sense. I'm just trying to deal with loseing this guy. Let me have my moment.

Re: Clowney Decision

I believe there's an article on ESPN that talks about Alabama's scheme really wouldn't be advantageous for JC to play in. I'm not sure why but it talked about the type of 3-4 scheme Saban runs isn't the best fit for JC.

Every team "needs" a top 5 player, no matter the position. We definitely needed rushers and I think our staff knew where Clowney was going when we took in Dickson and Pagan. Both of those guys are going to good (Pagan has the injury, but if he recovers, he'll be very good). Considering we were never the team to beat or the expected destination, it doesn't hurt as badly as when CK first announced to the barn (thankfully he made the right choice in the end). I'm glad we don't play USCe next year (unless we meet in ATL) b/c that should be their best year in a 4-5 year period.

I didn't read the article, but JC really is a bit small (right now at least) for a 3-4 DE. He could put on weight once in college, but 240-250 is a bit small for us. He is the prototype 4-3 DE so I think he'll succeed at USCe, although I think Clemson's D would have been a better fit (they did lose Rumph, but have a history of very good DL). We would definitely have used him in our rabbit package this year (I was picturing a faster, stronger version of E. Anders) until he put on 10-20 pounds to be an every down player.

Re: Clowney Decision

I don't know about that. I believe their best chance was last season. They had a lot of things go their way, had a ton of talent and still managed to lay a freakin' egg in the SECCG. Granted Cam was hard for anybody to stop but USCe didn't even make a contest of it.

Without trying to sound like I've got sour grapes. I believe JC will be three and done at USCe, have some highlight reel plays, but ultimately play on an underachieving team that gets talked up every preseason. But much like its out of conference rival Clemson, will fall short of all the preseason hype.

What I was trying to emphasize is that the perceived success/failure of this year's class did not depend on signing Clowney. The greatness of our defense would not have depended upon his being a part of it. I personally believe we will be just fine without him. I do not recall any Bama team that relied upon the greatness of any one or 2 players when we had championship years. It has always been a great TEAM that has won it for us; unlike our state rival who would have not won anything without their paid QB.
