I realize Indiana is not Alabama.
That doesn’t change the fact that going from 42nd to 123rd in Scoring Offense is concerning.
When we make hires like this I always go read forum posts from those former teams to get a better idea.
I went and read Indiana fans thoughts and they echoed each other in that Sheridan was the worst OC they have ever had.
They feel about him how we probably feel about Radar or Applewhite or BoB.
They said the scheme and play calling were atrocious and it really came down to asking Penix to bail them out with a miracle play.
On the flip side they have nothing but good things to say about Wommack as DC.
So I feel optimistic about where we are at DC.
I do not feel the same about OC.
I or we just have to hope it works out despite the ominous tea leaves.
Is it OK if we tell everyone the whole story?
* Indiana went 6-2 Sheridan's first year (Covid year), including wins over Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin. They came within a TD of beating the Ohio State team we faced for the NC, and lost by six to Ole Miss in the bowl. Penix's performance in the shortened season was good enough to get him onto the Walker, Camp, etc.award watch lists heading into the 2021 year.
* In that 2021 season, due to injuries, Indiana was forced to use
four different starting quarterbacks during the season: Michael Penix, Donaven McCulley, Jack Tuttle and Grant Gremel. Gremel was a walk-on. Other than Penix, none really got enough work to get into a rhythm as a quarterback; passing attempts for these four on the year were (respectively): 162, 82, 87, 58.
* 30 players missed at least one game each for injury and 18 were knocked out for the season at some point. This is where the "Indiana isn't Alabama" thing becomes most important, because Alabama could start its second team and finish with a winning record in the SEC. Indiana can't come close.
* Most importantly, let's be clear on what the goal is to Kalen DeBoer hiring an offensive coordinator, any offensive coordinator: This is like Saban hiring a defensive coordinator -- DeBoer is not bringing in someone to "run the offense." He's bringing in people to help
him implement
his offense. We will not be bringing in a standalone OC to run that side of the ball the way Saban hired Kiffin, Sarkisian, etc. If DeBoer's system can't cut it, we'll probably cut ties with DeBoer himself. We won't be picking at the edges. That would be the same thing as telling Saban to turn the defensive design over to Pete Golding. It didn't happen under him and it's not going to happen now.
When you frame the situation in the terms that actually apply to it, the above is what you get: This is DeBoer's offensive system, not Ryan Grubb's or Nick Sheridan's. It's either going to work or not because of DeBoer, not the guys hired to assist him.
