The husband of a friend of mine was a huge FSU fan, and he and I would discuss football on occasion. Early in the 2013 season, we talked about how it looked like Bama and FSU could possibly meet up in the BCS NCG. Of course, we all know the barn derailed our chances and ended up playing them instead. The day after the game, I made a congratulatory post to Frank on FB and made a comment about how FSU lost to an SEC team (UTe) in the 1st BCS game, so it was kind of neat that they redeemed that loss by beating an SEC team (barn) in the final BCS game. A mutual friend then commented to me that I was “one of THOSE people” because I didn’t pull for the in-state team. (I don’t think I even made a comment one way or the other about which team I did or didn’t pull for in my post.) She wasn’t the only person to express their disappointment that I didn’t want to sit around in a circle holding hands and singing Kumbaya with all of the barn faithful. The concept of them being a rival flew right over their heads.

I lived amongst them, about 25 miles NW, for 26 years. For a long time I was one of few Bama fans (the only alumni for a while) on the faculty/staff where I taught, so I put up with a lot. The already obnoxious ones became even more obnoxious in 2010. It was during those years that my dislike started trending more toward distaste for them. Thankfully, I’m surrounded by more crimson these days. LOL
 
Here’s my issue with Auburn: growing up, I went to church with a lot of Auburn fans / graduates, and I work with a number of AU grads as well. There’s this “holier than thou” attitude that seems to permeate that fan base, or at least the more highly educated end of the spectrum. They are similar to Ole Miss fans in that regard. They view AU as this very prestigious, exclusive university that somehow has higher moral fortitude than all of their rival schools. I have a more difficult time dealing with that than, say, UT fans who tend to be more of the obnoxious redneck / hillbilly variety in my experience.

That, and anytime Auburn has anything close to sustained success, their fan base seems to believe that they’ve turned a corner and supplanted Alabama, Georgia, etc. in the SEC pecking order. During their Iron Bowl streak from ‘02 - ‘07, I had more than one Auburn fan literally tell me that they would never lose to Bama again.

I wouldn’t say I “hate” them because I know some decent AU fans, but in general I find them extremely intolerable.

Two of my besties are Auburn grads. Great guys... Neither worries a bit about football. I might get a polite War Eagle if we lose. Actually, one of them is a huge football watcher, he just doesn't get bent out of shape. He watched a ton of Saban Alabama football and was a big admirer of what he termed 'good footballin.'

And then... there are the cultists. One time I was at a soccer game for one of the kids and people were talking about their college experiences. One lady was from Minnesota and went to the U of Minnesota. She had a great time there, made lifelong friends, learned a lot, all the best of the university experience. There was another lady who became progressively agitated and started trying to argue with her that she couldn't have learned anything and had a terrible experience "because she didn't go to Auburn." Then other people chimed in and expressed the belief that many universities were great and offered great experiences.

The Auburn lady moved in a huff at the half and the Minnesota lady asked us "what is up with these crazy Auburn grads? I've had more than one tell me Minnesota was terrible and sucked compared to the high heavenly ways of Auburn. I don't care that they like there school, but why are they so concerned with me having a great time at Minnesota?"

Yep... It was a bit surreal and something I've seen more than once. I can't recall an Alabama alum pulling this kinda crap.
