Bama Coordinator Search Thread

I know many here don't want Freeze. I'm not big on it myself.

That being said, Saban has been very complimentary of him in the past, and they are pals. Until a hire is made or Hugh has a new job, I will not dismiss the idea of Saban hiring him.

He checks off pretty much every box of any previous Saban Coaching Rehab Center patient.

But usually he lets them get a little further away from the Drama before the offer is made. The Freeze stuff is still very VERY fresh..... I just can't see it happening this year.

Even if you took away the NCAA and his personal problems. When did Hugh Freeze ever develop any kind of running game at Ole miss???? Yeah they looked great when they played Alabama but when they weren't playing their super bowl, their lack of a running game constantly tanked them. They constantly blew big leads because they had no concept of how to run out the clock.

That's the thing - after five years the NCAA wasn't able to tie anything to Freeze, which is why his penalties were basically non-existent.
Excuse the hyperbolic and outlandish nature of this comparison but the Feds also rarely pin murders to mob bosses as well.

That is to say, we all know this stuff was rolling from the top downhill. Freeze may not have pulled the trigger but he facilitated a culture of wanton moral behavior and atrocious ethics.

While I could not deny that he would likely be a great signal caller do you not think he'd be more of a liability on the recruiting trail than an asset?

I think saying that people forgive and give 2nd chances sweeps this under the rug a little too easily. There are going to be MANY people who don't want their kid being mentored by a known philanderer and cheater. Not the CFB is all roses and rock solid marriages but the metldown of Ole Miss was spectacular and so stinkin recent.

It's not so much that he probably didn't want to have a running game but he'd run out of cash when he got into the grocery line and had to put the one he had in the cart back on the shelf.

Given our backfield talent it's as simple as calling a run play. Nearly any run play - and we'd have a good running game. Forgive the glibness but it very nearly is true.

Lane and Tosh each had NCAA trouble before coming to Bama.

Yah sort of -

but it feels like someone saying, "Look, I don't want O.J. Simpson watching my kids."

and the other guy being like, "Oh sure he's had a run in with the law but your last babysitter had a speeding ticket too."

I feel the scope of Ole Miss's transgressions coupled with his very public extramarital dalliances and the nearness of all this exploding pushes Freeze into a different category than Tosh and Lane.

Well one could argue how well that " rehab" program has worked.

Sometimes, yes. I'd say most of the time, honestly. but not always.

I'll trust Saban on that one - he's forgotten more about recruiting than I'll ever know.

Keep in mind that as recently as yesterday I posted that I didn't want him at Bama. I know more about what went on at OM than many here (probably most) and I think he'd be detrimental to Bama overall. But I felt that way about Kiffin and was mostly wrong.

So again, I don't want him, but if Saban hires him I'll just remain optimistic and hope for the best.

If memory serves me, McElwain was a bit of an outside-the-box/out-of-the-blue pick that a lot of people didn't see coming...he wasn't on a lot of people's radars or speculative short lists. Nuss was a little more of a "name brand", having been OC at U-Dub and generally though of as one of the top up-and-coming young OCs. Kiffin was obviously the ultimate name brand with all the good and bad that came along with it. Daboll was more of an obscure choice like Mac, but one look at his pedigree and it all made perfect sense.

Coach Saban tends to hire defensive coordinators that he has ties to and personal comfort level with, and offensive coordinators with fewer ties to the program or himself. He hasn't historically promoted from within (not counting Sark).

Regarding Freeze, if you listened to his recent interview with Clay Travis ( his first public comments) he mentioned CNS by name as one of the few coaches who stayed in contact and check up on him.
He was asked about being able to recruit given the circumstances, (paraphrasing here) he said that he would tell parents how he learned from his mistakes and was given an opportunity by coach at X university and wouldn't violate that trust.

I feel like I need a bath after posting a link to his site, but there it is. I know it was a soft gloves PR piece but give it a listen if you haven't

Mac also had the QB guru attached to him when CNS brought him here.

This shouldn't go unnoticed. I know they hung out from time to when Freeze owned a lakehouse on Lake Burton. Their families cooked out together and so forth. So it doesn't seem out of the ordinary that a personal relationship was formed. Bu there's a part of me that also believes this move was strategic as well. He may or may not consider hiring Freeze right now. But I dang sure bet his contact information went into his Rolodex of coaches he keeps on file to possibly be pulled later.

I keep hearing Locksley from posters and have seen tweets from Damien Harris speaking favorably of him. Others seem very unsure.

What's the draw to him (other than his current role and popularity with some of the players) and what's the concern with him?

We do not need players picking coaches. The players were all in for DuBose and then Mike Price, as well.

I want to remind everyone that lot of people weren't happy with Kiffin hire, and it worked out well for Kiffin and Alabama. If we go with Freeze, That's fine.. it's just football, not personal. Hugh could use some rehabbing and remind folks that he can still coach football. Hugh can make our offense explosive and he can make use of our QBs whoever that is. Imagine offense averaging 50 points a game... while Defense holding the teams to 14 points or below.

He also didn’t have Damien Harris, Najee Harris, Josh Jacobs, and Brian Robinson. He also didn’t have someone making him commit to a run game.

I’m not saying he should be the guy. I’m just making that point. I would prefer Chip Long or Mike Locksley. Locksley because I think he deserves it and I don’t want to lose his recruiting. If we didn’t already have Locksley on staff I would prefer Chip Long.
