Was one of my favorite Bama players when I was young. He was the QB the first time I saw Bama play when they beat Ole Miss 12-7 in a bowl game in 1963.

Did not see this posted anywhere. Steve was a favorite of Coach Bryant's. I knew Steve personally and you could not find a nicer guy. Rest In Peace.
In 64 it was clear he was not Joe Wily against Texas but in 65 he was absolutely Mr. Clutch but always had that kid named Stabler who was something special.

Now I understand, I've always known the name but not the guy. Westide has a few years even on me. This puts it in the proper time perspective.

Was he the one who hired Bill Curry when he was AD?
He was fired at Duke after the 1986 season (Spurrier took his place). He was hired here as AD. I remember seeing him and Curry at the press conference together so I don’t think he had anything to do with Curry’s hiring. He was AD 1986-89. So he was only here during Curry’s tenure. I do not know why he left here.

Ok so it must have been Joab Thomas, the university president, who hired Curry then.
