Plenty of talent in Mississsippi
The Magnolia State is often one of the most underappreciated states in the country when it comes to producing football talent. However, in the "Inside the Numbers" study done by Rivals.com in early 2004, the state of Mississippi produces more NFL players per capita than any other state in the country.

Markeith Summers is one of the top prospects in Mississippi.
This year the top player in the Magnolia State is headed out of state to play his college football, however, the Ole Miss Rebels and Mississippi State Bulldogs will have several representatives in the top ten by signing day as well.
TE Jonathan Massey claims to have a Bama offer but he either does not list Bama as a school or interest or low interest. Also Bama Mag and BOL do not list him as a Bama prospect. He claims to have a high interest in Ole Miss.

Strangely Rivals.com RebelGrove.com does not even have him listed in there.

How good are Pharr and Motley?

Would some of you insiders please tell us just how good these guys are? I noticed that the responses to the announcements were warm but not hot. Up here in NC we know nothing about these guys other than what we learn on TideFans. I am eager to know if these were home runs or singles. Thanks for any enlightenment you can provide.

they were the camp standouts, as we've discussed in the recruiting sticky at the top of the page (where I'll merge this momentarily).

Pharr had many good offers already and was pretty much waiting on a Bama offer. This staff loves to see OL and QBs especially in person at camp. Motley and Pharr and David Ross all separated themselves from the others at camp.

Both these guys have good motors, great feet that never stop moving. They should be very good OL for us.

Smith, Pharr, Motley, and Ross are the state's 4 best OL.

They are both solid 3 stars. Motley's height will probably hurt him in the rankings, but he supposedly dominated at the camp. Pharr had several big time offers. He might end up being a 4 star with a good senior year. They are a solid start to a critical O line class.

I'm not sure Massey has a Bama offer. I'll check into it further.

CB Marquise Johnson received a Bama offer after a good showing at camp. Alabama is his favorite. Could commit this summer after a visit to MD. 6'1" with 4.4 speed.

I am not sure either and I have not listed him in my prospect list. Apparently even if he has the Bama offer that he claims he has no interest or low interest in Bama. He has never been listed as a Bama prospect anywhere that I have seen.

what's the deal with the new possible grayshirt. bamamag has a story, but I have no access, could it be another commit?
I dont' either, but there are discussions on some boards about Patrick Hanrahan (no profiles), a FB from Springville who perhaps has a greyshirt offer. As in, he just graduated, will sit out this fall, and come in with the class of '06. I am NOT certain about this. Hopefully, we'll have some more info on this.

I think the word "maybe" a new grayshirt is key. In the pic he is a FB and in the other article he is the St. Clair County defensive player of the year. I am sure we will hear more soon. Here is a pic of him.

More hat tipping

hearing now that he's possibly a Bryant Scholly....so, from that he won't count towards numbers in '06. I still wouldn't put that in concrete.

UA adds two commitments; Brian Motley and Taylor Pharr
The University of Alabama football team has received its fourth and fifth verbal commitments from high school players for the February 2006 signing period.
Alabama adds two line commitments
Two-way lineman Brian Motley of Autaugaville chose Alabama late Wednesday, then blue-chipper Taylor Pharr of Shades Valley followed suit late Thursday. Both prep stars grew up Alabama fans.
Motley commits to Tide
Brian Motley was an afterthought for the Alabama All-Stars Sports Week football game.

The Class 1A offensive lineman from Autaugaville had the talent to play in the game, but not the credentials of players participating from the state's larger schools.

But thanks to his appearance last spring, he earned a scholarship offer from Alabama.

We did have a Hanrahan, Gary Hanrahan, offensive guard, 1973 for those who couldn't remember/didn't know.

the top player in TN is either ATH Brandon Warren (no offer) or OL Jacquez McClendon (UcheaT commit w/ Bama offer). If you are referring to a TI headline, it's Michael Goggans who is from AL. He's a TE/DE.

The RB is Terry Grant who has a offer after camp.

Speaking of TE's, as reported here a while back, TE Preston Dial has Bama/FSU as his favorites. The staff will take 1-2 TEs. If it's one, whoever commits first will probably be it.

From Rivals Article on Marquis Johnson

"I like the school a lot," he said. "The facilities are great. The tradition is great and the place just felt more real than anywhere else.

"I mean it is a college town for real. They are all about Alabama football down there. People would drive by and yell out of their cars, 'Roll Tide Roll.' It's crazy."
Pretty much sums it up, eh? :)

Does anybody recall how soon the state's newspapers will weigh in with their respective "top 10 super seniors" type listings? Doesn't it come out as early as August, or later?
