I will Preface this and just say I hope I am wrong. and, I have been a huge supporter of CKD‘s since he took the job. But…

listening to him talk, his message, his gestures, the season last year . it all makes me question if he has ‘it’. It being that something that separates the really good coaches from the elite coaches. I guess we shall know in about four months.

something interesting. I heard Kirby make the comment on local Atlanta talk radio that coaches will not be fired like they were in the past, paying players will keep coaches around longer because AD’s can’t afford the buyouts like in the past.

He might be right, but I predict that HC salaries, including the SEC, will plateau as funds move to the players. The average NFL HC makes $5.5mm per year and the average SEC HC makes $7.6mm per year. That’s rather remarkable considering how much money NFL teams make compared to even SEC football programs. I do think schools will be more thoughtful about letting coaches go with big buyouts, but I wonder if schools will start trending towards smaller buyouts as HCs are hired going forward. I just don’t see the big programs settling for mediocrity in this age of expanded playoffs/NIL/revenue sharing. Teams are quick to let coaches go in the NFL and I think they will be in the SEC as well.

I'm not saying you are wrong. Nobody (including myself) knows. And, yes, time will tell as it always does.

But, I do think your feelings might be based on judging him as compared to CNS. And when we start comparing anybody to CNS they'll come up remarkably short. And that is especially the case when comparing someone with the way CNS "communicates." IMO, that was one of the elite areas of his acumen. He has the unique ability to say something very succinctly but at the same time make it make practical sense. That's why he's so good on TV. So yeah, if messaging/communication is all that coaching is, CKD is not close to CNS's equal. But, who is???

I think we have a very deep staff and one that is probably equal to many of CNS's best coaching staffs. The GOAT, aside, I think we are in great shape and I think CKD was a great choice to follow CNS.

With the parity we have now it’s going to be the coach’s job to keep the tantrums and injuries to a minimum, evaluate hidden talent from the portal, and develop that talent. All of this is just to give the team a chance to make the playoffs. The margin for error is substantially larger than in the past.

I had not heard this new rule.
if the defensive players being substituted are taking a leisurely pace off the field, it is a penalty. This is another judgment call by the refs, but at l;east it is during a segment of play that they are not watching live play.
Also, once the ball is spotted, player goes down with an "injury," his team gets charged a time out. If they don't have a TO remaining, if is a delay of game penalty.

It's a start!
Delay of game should become an un sportsman like penalty, because that what it is! 5 yards is not enough to stop the shenanigans

I don’t like it, another judgement call.

I agree.
The spokesman for SEC officials did say the team will get a warning.
And the judgement call will be exercised at a time when officials won't have too much going on. That was my critique of increasing to 3 yards the offensive lineman downfield. At the time when an official is supposed to make that judgment call, there's a lot going on (i.e. in the middle of a play).
