USF wrap-up: Defense shines, offense sputters as Bama pulls away late
by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief

Prior to the Western Kentucky opener, we asked the question of how Alabama’s new defensive alignment would fare if and when things went a bit sideways.

We didn’t get that question answered against the Hilltoppers. We absolutely got it answered against the South Florida Bulls.

The answer? Pretty darn good.

Milroe will fill up a stat sheet. But he doesn’t give me (personally) the confidence that he can guide us to a championship.

Some people lead. Some work very hard to “appear” to lead. That’s Milroe. Bryce’s leadership appeared strong, but much of it was an appearance of leadership. Milroe’s approach is similar, but even less effective

think about actors

Tua would be Tom Hanks (elite)
Mac would be Brad Pitt (looks good, but…needs a great supporting cast)
Bryce would be Adam Sandler (super nice guy)
Milroe is Nicolas Cage

Developing depth will be essential to challenging for titles in this new NFL model season in college. I like the direction we are headed in. Hopefully we can benefit from getting these young Oline players snaps despite the bumps in the road.

The game just gets too fast for him when the other team brings pressure. It was one of his problems last year and apparently again this season.

Right now he's not. despite playing 2 less than great teams, he's only 11th in passing yards in the SEC. let that sink in. 11th out of 16 starting QBs in passing yards. that's almost bottom 25%.

I'm not as sold on our defensive showing in this game. We got lucky that Brown could not hit a few receivers that were wide open numerous times. Brown was able to partially make up for that with his feet. And while 16 points is not too shabby, we should have been a little better than that. If we play anything like this against Ga, its going to get pretty ugly.

I agree with the pass selections. I was saying during the game to throw some 10-15 yard passes to either move the chains or get the DBs from turning and running on the snap. Also they finally ran a screen pass with all the pressure they were bringing. We seemed slow to adjust to the pressure going 5 straight possession with 3 and out. WE need a better plan to drive the ball instead of just hoping to hit the home run.

Right now I think Milroe is Dwayne Johnson, doing the same thing every time and being enormously popular, with a contract stating he won't lose a fight on screen

While the slow adjustments and penalties are certainly a concern, this “the sky is falling” regarding the OL is a familiar refrain. During some of Saban’s best years, we were infamously unimpressive in our second game of the year, sometimes against less talented teams than USF. We would come out in Atlanta or Arlington with laser focus and be unstoppable and then come back to T-town uninspired. Many of those years, we didn’t have the injury situation that is here now. Until this line is back up to full strength, any long-term prognostications are premature. Consider if Proctor is good to go next week, and they have confidence that Pritchett is healthy enough to start and go the distance. Consider if our pre-snap motions along the line are more impressive than they have been the first two weeks. We could have an entirely new kind of conversation this time next week.

I’m not pumping sunshine; I’m just stating that these concerns have been common early September issues in the past.

Compare JM to Ewers or Beck...highly efficient QBs who can read the game and are capable of changing plays when looking at the defense and utilizing the talent around them. JM doesnt have that ability..he's big, fast and has a strong arm but his mental game isnt on par with the top QBs. Pressure reduces the time to make decisions after the snap, he hasnt improved his pre-snap reads so pressure inevitably creates panic and instinct takes over. Sometimes it leads to a great play but mostly it leads to a loss of yards or no yards on the down. Same as last year.

He has not improved at all.
