The silver lining in the dark cloud is that we have plenty of room for improvement and we only lost by 9 to the #1 team in the country. Since he has been here CNO has been very good at figuring out which buttons to press so I'm confident that he will be able to do that this year. I would love to have won yesterday and be the #1 team in the polls but the only poll that will be remembered in 10 years is the final poll.

Watching the game, it seemed like we were outprepared and outplayed and shot poorly. Yet, we made runs to actually keep it close and even tie the game late. The key was that all of our shots seemed difficult, and all of their shots were good looks. They didn't seem to do anything fancy, but they always seemed to get a good shot. Oh well, that one is behind us, and we have a full plate waiting on us the next few weeks.

I’m not sure CNO cares about a new arena or massive upgrades to Coleman. From what I’ve constantly heard from some in the know is that CNO has expressed more about money going towards players over looking at a new arena.

New arena should have been done a long time ago. How in the world Auburn got a new one built during a time frame where they were consistently one of the worst teams in the league is crazy

Auburn did it when the costs of building one wasn’t astronomically insane to build one. Alabama was far more focused at the time of rebuilding the Joe and figuring out how to fuel the football machine.

The arena was very much an investment to try and make basketball competitive again. Cavernous old Beard-Eaves Mausoleum had run its course.

There's a lot of disappointment in this thread coming here to say, "If we just had a new arena." I know a game of this magnitude puts a spotlight on old Coleman, but remember CNO has advocated for NIL and a new players area over a new arena. I think one day it'll happen, but a new arena is not why we lost Saturday and it won't keep us from winning a NC under CNO.

As for the game, let's remember it's just "one game." This is not like football and one game/loss makes a season. We'll get AU again and probably again after that if we advance in the SECT.

I think there are two things it'll take to beat AU we didn't do Sat. The first is we've got to make 3s. Yeah, everybody knows this. If not, we can still win but we have to outphysical them to an extreme. We seem to have an aversion to want to play very physical but his game is a reminder to beat AU we must.

And what happens the next time when the 3s don't fall? How did we beat Houston and Memphis earlier his year? We've got to be tough and strong. And next time around we've got to get Nelson in iso more. He and Mo D in isolation can offset the way they played us. When they bring help on them we get the open 3s. If not they score or get fouled. I'm not sure why we didn't adjust to this on Sat. but I think next time we will.

As much as I hate losing to AU in anything, I'm not mad about not being ranked #1 right now.
It seems (just from my casual observance) that a couple of players have (A): bought into their own hype or (B): are trying to show out for the NBA and are hurting the team.
This team has a lot of talent but we need to get it together to make a deep run in the tourney.
That having been said, we are still light years above where we were with the past 3 or 4 coaches. We're playing at a higher level and getting recruits that we would previously not even been sniffed at by them.

To me, the game was swung in AU's favor due to their game plan. They used their bigger, more physical guards to cover our smaller guards and guarded them out to 25 feet... forcing them to drive. When they drove to the basket, the passes they usually get to three-point shooters weren't there because AU didn't collapse down on them with help. Instead, they relied on their longer guards to recover and make our guards shoot tough shots. Time and time again Sears and Holloway drove to the basket and got stoned because they just couldn't finish those types of shots against bigger opponents.

Midway through the 2nd half, we figured it out and Philon started making shots going to the goal due to his bigger size - that was during our comeback and when we started playing them even. Then, for some inexplicable reason, Oats took Philon out of the game and left Sears and Holloway in the game - and AU jumped back out for good. To me, this one was partially on Oats because we finally had something working and then he substituted and went away from it. Bigger, more physical guards - that was the biggest difference in the game IMO.

To be honest, I'm not really all that upset we lost this one. It sucks to lose to your rival, but I think losing this game will end up benefiting us in the long run. I said before the game, I'd rather get swept by Auburn in the regular sesson than sweep them. I'm a big believer in the mental aspect of the game, and when there's a rematch in the tournament, the odds typically favor the loser of the previous matchup, especially when teams are as close in talent as these two teams are. I don't see a world where we play them 3-4 times and don't take at least one, so in that sense, I don't think it's a bad thing that we didn't take the first one. We just need to take the one in the NCAA tournament.

Unless this is a team falling apart (no evidence for that), Saturday's was an outlier performance for whatever reason. Give me an average offensive performance in three weeks and the regular season series with AU likely ends at 1-1...

Hasn't Philon been battling an injury recently? I wonder if he was trying to make sure the injury didn't worsen by playing Philon too much. I assume that is why Reid didn't play more, he was on a pitch count trying to not aggravate the injury that Reid has battled the past few weeks. I know CNO wants to win every game but perhaps he's looking at the bigger picture and trying to make sure he has a healthy roster when the big dance starts.
