Barn charging five bucks for their spring game

74 posts in 7 years...thy name is troll.

Just because I don't post all the time doesn't make me a troll. I'm sorry if it upsets me that our fan base didnt show their support on Saturday like they should have. For those that went, like I did, thanks for going. There is no reason on this earth why we can't show our support better for this team and our coaching staff. Forget the fact the Auburn had 83k people at their game. We should have had at least 90k at ours. Weather was perfect. Yesterday was our 2nd worse turnout under Saban and after a national championship season on top of that. It just makes me mad. I'm sorry if my anger upsets anyone but to call me a troll when you don't even know me is crazy. Not only do I have season tickets and support the crimson tide foundation, I even went to and graduated from Alabama.

I didn't make it to A-Day for the first time in nearly 10 years. That doesn't make me a bad fan. I'm sure many would have loved to attend but could not.

I don't understand the sense of entitlement that fans seem to have for a free A-Day game. I have no problem with charging money for the A-Day game. Flying those recruits and coaches around the country costs a lot of money.

For those that don't want to pay, would you be willing to give a few cans of food as your payment to support the local food bank? I just don't get the entitlement some of you have by thinking it would be horrible to charge $5.

I kind of disagree on that. I wouldn't mind charging a nominal, token amount, but any admission price that would generate any meaningful amount of revenue would be so high that it would significantly curb attendance (and hence revenue, which defeats the purpose) because the quality of the product being offered just isn't high enough to justify any legitimate price, especially given the overall cost of attendance in connection with attending the event (transportation, lodging, dining, parking, time expended, etc.).

The best thing about having the A-Day game free (or at least at token admission prices) is that it opens up the stadium and the program to an entirely different socio-economic strata that is otherwise unable to attend the games, and as a result they often don't quite get the same exposure to the madness, so to speak. IMO keeping the A-Day game like it is helps expand the reach of the fanbase.

You may not pay admission, but you are paying to be there through concessions and so forth. Charging admission would be a mistake. Now if we started filling the stadium up and people were getting left outside, I'd see a reason to charge a few dollars, otherwise... keep it free!

Thousands of us were at little league ballparks all over the state Saturday. Some of us can't stop life for a spring scrimmage...factor in TV and I'd say it was impressive to still have 78k.

I wasn't at A-Day...my little boy turned 1 and we had a party for him that lasted until kickoff. Of course we watched the A-Day game as a big group and were glad it was on TV.

I honestly think it would be a shame to ever charge fans to attend the Spring Game. It is a scrimmage...not a revenue generating game. The city and University come out winners due to the tens of thousands of fans who come into town that day and for the weekend. People are more willing to spend money at restaurants, gas stations, and shopping because admission to the stadium is free. Plus, it is the only chance most people will ever get to sit in BDS and watch the Crimson Tide play. At $50-$80+ per ticket, most people cannot afford to attend Alabama football games. Throw in the waiting list for Tide Pride and you get people who could afford it but can't get tickets...who take advantage of the Spring Game. It's also a chance for parents to take their kids in the stadium and experience Alabama football in a way the TV never could.

As far as attendance goes...it was maybe 30,000 back when I was in school there (2000-2004)...and really only students and older alumni. What we have now is totally foreign to A-Day...and I think it is something we just expect now instead of being in awe that people actually show up to watch a scrimmage...and that ESPN would send their A crew to broadcast it nationwide.

Anyone who went to A-Day and feels they should charge needs to send Bill Battle a check for five dollars.

FWIW I think it's great the A day game is free....there's alotta folks who don't ever get to see them (our guys) play during the regular season... I know it's not a real game and I know 5 bucks ain't much, but some people can't even spare that. At least they get to see them live, even if it is a glorified scrimmage. That way they can support the team and bring alotta kids with them to watch too.

This.

I'd wager a lot of fans, like myself, had to work Saturday. I guess I could've burned a vacation day, but then I wouldn't have it for the actual season come fall...you know, when the games where having the stadium full of fans can actually have an impact on the outcome take place.

I think 70K plus is pretty darn good when you consider the fact that there are still a good many stadiums out there that don't even hold that many people at max cap.

Amen Brother! Also, they could buy an exta bottle of water (to take home) for $5.00. As I tell people who want a lottery "for the schools", they can go buy the local school each week and donate.
