Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

So Ty has regressed so much in last few games, that it's unbelievable. Part of that is injuries and another part is his mental toward the game. This goes back to OP's post and I think he nailed it. When you're getting nailed so much, you get in your own head and then you get antsy and making bad throws. Ty missed lot of open guys last night, and that's part to him being little too antsy. He didn't make efforts to run at time.

Saban always would allude to Ty having issues like this - when things were not going well for him, the issues seemed to compound.

This is confusing, but okay.
at least milroe could occasionally make teams pay with his legs or his long ball. ty can't throw any ball effectively at all right now and hasn't been able to for a while. while we haven't looked great, in both the barn and the uga game, we killed multiple drives with easy throws to open folks that were off target enough to screw up the play even when caught, or were just awfully thrown balls. that is in addition to all of the horrific drops we've had. hit a few of those and we are at least having drives that are longer than 3-4 plays and backing the d off. as annoying as grubb is, a lot of the plays we called have been there and the players didn't execute, in the last few weeks, it's been ty not executing on a lot of them.

there are myriad reasons, but the bottom line is he cannot do what is needed right now. i don't know if changing things up would help or hurt at this juncture, but i'm not expecting much out of him in norman and hope he can at least take care of the ball and not go three/four and out several times in the game.

I’m basing it off the look on his face and how his mechanics are different. He’s overcompensating for an injury. He’s late because he’s bracing himself for the pain. Not to mention the giant stim thing they put on him DURING a game.

He’s been beaten to death all year, but this has only been from the middle of the season on.

I think everyone needs to kinda step away from the ledge when it comes to changing the QBs going forward. you ride with Simpson for the playoff. There's no if, but and and about that. You don't put back up QBs in the game during the playoff. I'm confident Simpson will correct some of his issues enough to move forward.

I also want to point out something else: While the narrative you put out is true for the most part, we also have to consider this: Every time they're moving down the field, or making positive progress, what do Grubb do? He call a horrible play such as double reverse, Double pass, etc... that put the team in horrible position.

I encourage everyone to go back to the game last night. Watch Fromby and Vandermark in their position and compare run v.s. pass stance they were in. As matter of fact, The whole OL is tipping off the plays at times throughout the season. Last night, I told my wife what play Bama was about to run and I was right 85 percent of the time. If I can tell, then the opposing coaches can tell.

Sir, I agree with you on that.

I see people blaming Ty Simpson, and I did my share of blaming Milroe. However, the biggest problem has been our O Line not winning in the trenches. We were totally dominated in the trenches on both sides. And only lining up 3 on the D line has not worked at all.
I saw something peculiar in the OSU/ IU game last night. The OL for both sides would occasionally push the defenders out of the way, creating openings that the running backs would then run through for several yards at a clip.

Look, I like Ty a lot. He did what not many players will in this era of college football and patiently waited for his opportunity. But he's hurting. A lot. And it's obvious to everyone, especially opposing defenses.

So does an injured and shell-shocked Ty Simpson give us a better chance to win than a (presumably healthy) Austin Mack or Keelon Russell?

If the answer is no, then why is he still playing?

If the answer is yes, well, then we'd better hit the portal for a competent QB2 ASAP.

Every game Bama play provides more tape. To start the season there was no tape on Ty. As the season has progressed, the opposing DC's can see all they need to know on the tape. Bama has two weeks to throw OU off a bit and move away from all the tape that exists.

The Oline and running game is not going to get any better between now and Dec. 19. It is up to the coaches to find a way to scheme around that weakness. Should have already been done. I doubt it happens before the next game either.

Yeah, but isn’t that true for everyone? How come we didn’t make UGA crap the bed if that’s all there is to it?

Ty either has a concussion or, or is so jacked up on pain meds he’s slower to react through the pain.
I agree. He's got a bit of the "deer in the headlights" look, and throws that - earlier in the year - were just zipping out of his hand, are now being double pumped, thrown behind the receivers etc. Against the Barn, his head hit the ground a couple of times, with him grabbing his head afterward. There was also the uncalled targeting hit on his sideline run. Either that or he's just pressing to hard trying to be perfect. I wish he could find his back to how he was early in the year.

I'm not sure what it is, but I think back to the Eastern Illinois game. Yes, it was just Eastern Illinois, but Ty wasn't particularly sharp in that game either. But when we put in Mack and KR, the offense seemed to work like a well-oiled machine. Throws were out on time, right on target etc. Again, it was EIU, but I thought that would be a game in which Ty would look flawless. I hope he can fix whatever it is.

I mean it's football, right? You have to have a zig for the other team's zag but it requires recognition. You need a tight end or slot close to the tackle on both sides of the line that runs a hot route to the space vacated by the blitzer(s) on which ever side it comes from. If the QB and hot receiver both read it then you have a successful play most of the time.
