Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

The lack of a run game is murdering us. I thought maybe early season Grubb and DeBoer were proving me wrong and found a way to break the laws of football and have success with zero run game. I was like, “wow, I guess you can just basically mimic a run game with a clock eating short passing game.” But yeah that was an illusion, we just played some teams that didn’t adjust to our lack of running fully. They probably made the poor assumption that they had to defend against the run lol.

It must be fake. I also saw where Nick Saban made the same comment. SMH
Two or three times a week, I see a FB post about stuff a coach, player or media person is saying and they all read like this one did; dramatic, sensational, emotional, etc.

I'm not saying my spidy senses are great, but stuff like this pings on level 10 to me.

First, it doesn't even sound like the way CKD talks in public/interviews. Second, it doesn't sound like a team-building comment either.

Yeah, you can definitely peg AI generated comments and posts. It’s like what that judge said that one time about a certain topic- I can’t exactly explain what it is, but I know it when I see it. AI generated statements and write ups just have that uncanny valley feel to them. They just aren’t quite right. Either too formulaic, use of weird word choice/overuse of uncommon words, etc.

I am a history buff, and I very quickly noticed that now basically every “history” page on FB is just AI generated slop. Often times the pictures don’t align with the write up, the info is just straight wrong (but not in a way that a person would be wrong) and sometimes the pictures (like WWII stuff) are completely fake. I started noticing it with sports stuff too. Earlier this year I saw several “quotes” attributed to Saban or Chiefs players that were just wildly out of character for them to say, or to say in that manner. AI is ruining the internet.

Yeah, as you said (and I didn't mention) there are usually some facts that are obviously wrong!

I have not been sold on KD and most ofnthe staff along with the Strength and Conditioning Staff. When Scott was here we dominated. But out OL is not doing its job I believe its part of the Strength and Conditioning along with our OL Coach and Grubb. Just my thoughts

In addition to the G-Mac tweet, I just saw one from Nick Kelly: Alabama had 6 drops in the SEC Championship alone.

When you put those two together, the insinuation is Ty was getting the ball to his guys and they were dropping or not making the play.

This does make me feel better about having a couple weeks off to get back on track, but playing in Norman will not be easy.

I know TY has had his ups and downs, but tell me a QB who has no running game and awful oline blocking, and has their team in the playoffs?
I was watching "Read and React" this morning with analysts Cole Cubelic and Roman Harper as they were highlighting plays that Georgia DL succeeded at over our OL. They said the problem with most of these plays is NOT that we didn't recognize what Georgia was doing. We even reacted in ways we should have very often, but couldn't react fast enough or well enough to what we saw was coming.

So, I don't think it's about S&C, but injuries (especially with our center) and liabilities of youth with #64 and inabilities with quickness from some of the other OL.

They also pointed out that our misses weren't limited to just one position, but that many of the plays had just ONE person who missed their assignment and that's what blew the play up.

The fact that this OL can't run block OR pass block consistently is evidence to me that it's the Johnnies and Joes and not so much the Xs and Os.

Both apply to coaching, but in terms of those positions, our strategies don't match the abilities of some of these players so the only way to fix that is through recruiting/portal and player improvement, which takes time.

CKD is largely playing with CNS recruits. Keep that in mind. In the next year or two, we'll start seeing the guys he's recruited and it'll become more obvious, but for now, we've got to let him do what he was hired to do.

And remember, our OL has been a mess for several years under CNS! This is not a new OR problem exclusive to CKD's tenure!

Yep, FB is flooded with this stuff and stupid people comment and respond; exactly what they are looking for. You can usually read the first sentence and know common sense would tell you that CKD, Kirby or whoever they are "quoting" never speaks about competition, refs, etc like that. I report and block; FWIW.

If the kid is injured to the point some on here are implying, he shouldn't be on the field. Period.

I'm a big fan of Ty and I respect him for waiting for his turn to lead the Tide. The first half of the season he greatly exceeded my expectations. But we need to play the guy who currently gives us the best chance to win. Is Ty at 70-75% better than Mack at 100%? I don't know but I suspect not. Especially if Ty is injured and playing timid. I keep thinking about that busted play where the back went the wrong way and Ty slid down 5 yards behind the LOS. That was just weird. Makes me think he's injured and avoiding getting hit. You're not going to get very far in the playoffs with a QB who is playing timid and in pain.

The good news is that CKD and CRG have two weeks to figure out who should be our QB and to put together a gameplan that maximizes that QB's abilities. They also have two weeks to figure out how to attack OUs defensive schemes. They know what we'll see - the exact same defensive scheme we've seen in the last four games. They're supposed to be "offensive gurus" so this is their chance to live up to the reputation.
The coaches have also been telling Ty not to force a broken play because of the fumbles.

One other thing from Cube and Roman, while windows were smaller, Ty had open receivers.

One time he had RW lined up at WR on the right. Georgia was in a one high safety look, which is a great look for long ball, and RW made a double move and was wide open as he ran his route. Now we can debate if he would have caught it, but Ty NEVER even looked that way. Ty caught the snap, looked into the left flats for D. Hill and hurriedly threw a bad ball.

But, if Ty momentarily looks left there, it holds the single high safety, and then goes back to RW streaking open long on the right, it's a big gain OR TD if we execute the throw and completion.

The point is, we didn't even try it. I can't remember the last time Ty tried a long ball. And even if he's injured, he can still get the ball out. His throw to Horton across the field was perfect and hit Horton in the hands, but that ball was thrown on a rope - probably 25 yard shot on a rope, so if he has the velocity to throw that throw he could throw it 40 yards with some air under it!

^^^^ 100% this! O-Line issues will not be fixed over the course of a year or even two, especially when compounding the issue with installing an offensive that utilizes a different “style” of O-lineman than what we had recruited for over the past few years.

If Mack and Russell were throwing everything would have been caught. 😉

The freshman OL Michael Carroll has been great. He and Dijon Lee have earned freshmen all Americans. On3, All Freshmen Team.

True for the most part, but only partially so on the OL. Brailsford and Dewberry both transferred in under CKD. VandeMark is kinda the same. Carroll was recruited under Saban, but CKD could have easily said no if he's not the right type guy and gone out to get someone who 'is a better fit". Even Proctor was brought back by CKD after 'transferring out' - someone under CKD had to agree to having him come back.

That's pretty much all the starters...

I'm not picking on him. He's #64 right? But the problem is he's a "freshman" and he's making mistakes too.

It's like our worse plays are the ones with there's a bust. 5 or 6 guys may do the right think, but if just one misses their assignment the whole play explodes.

^^This.

Lots of weird Alabama so called Facebook pages. I think almost all are fake. Clickbait through and through.

The Film Guy's breakdown of the Georgia defense vs us is a pretty tough watch. They had ZERO concern or expectation of us running the ball; even on 2nd and 8/9 with only five in the box. The beat our line consistently, tackled well and covered or receivers in man very well. Would post the link; but he uses a bit of language. Though, nothing worse than Saban and McAfee on GameDay.
