Best players ever from your high school?

Phillips High, B'ham, AL

Just the ones I went to school with:

Creed Gilmer, Football, Alabama
Joe Sims, Baseball, Alabama
Tommy Kelley, Football, FSU

I went to Banks and graduated (yes, graduated) in 1975. I think Frank Warren graduated from Phillips around 1976 (correct me if I'm wrong).

As a high school football player, track star, and all-around athlete he was one of the most impressive high school athletes I ever watched compete.

Hey, jthomas666. Go Wildcats!

I would add another name to the list -- Barry Talley. This guy was the best HS RB I have ever seen. No one outside of North Alabama has ever heard of him because he couldn't get in at a major college anywhere. He played one year at Tuskeege then joined the Army. But when I watch Saun Alexander run it's like watching a replay of Barry Talley. They guy was smooth and deceptively fast.

Go Cats

1. Pat Tramell (Football Stadium named after him)

2. Fumbling Don Jacobs:biggrin:

3. Randy Ross (whatever that is worth) was my Coach for 1 year b4 he went to Vandy to be TE Coach

4. Buddy Holt was Def. Co. on the same team with Coach Ross. He eventually became the Pricipal of Scottsboro High School. He was the punter on the 78 and 79 UA teams. He also holds the record for the longest punt in ua history (80 or so yds). Pretty sure it still stands .... may be #2 now

Yes I'm an OF and remember Mike Mathis very well! big #44! It was a sad all over when I woke up that Sat am and heard on the radio that a UA football player had drowned. I really thought he was going to be a hoss for Coach Bryant.

I'll add Mario Morris and soon to be ROMAC to the list from DHS.

There was a picture of Mike in the yearbook his senior year of him carrying pretty much the entire opposing defense on his back.

Since bball players have been mentioned, Ricky Hardin was the best bball player I ever saw at DHS. He and Condredge Holloway had some battles.

Actually the record book has him 4th behind Dixie Howell, who had an 89 yd punt against UT in '33, and also had an 83yd against Ky that same year.

There have been a bunch of guys that have gone on to have some success playing football from my high school, but there are two guys who stand out from the others.

1. Dan Marino
2. Marc Bulger

Both played at Central Catholic here in Pittsburgh.

At Parkview High in Lilburn Ga, let's see...

Matt Stinchcomb, UGA, Raiders, Bucs
Jon Stinchcomb, UGA, Saints
Brett Conway, Packers
Ainsley Battles, Vanderbilt, Jaguars I think
Jeff Francouer, Braves

Probably others, PHS was ranked No. 7 sports progam for high schools in the country a year or two ago by USA Today.

You forgot David Overmyer, OT at FSU currently. Of course, all of these were way before my time. What year did you graduate? I graduated in '84. Same year Francouer was born.
