Did you hear that the Administration is to meet with oil company execs in Tallahassee to discuss oil prices. What a joke -- talk about the fox in the hen house. The same tired old rhetoric about less oil being pumped, etc, etc. as the reason for the high prices is anticipated. If that was the case then the oil companies would be reporting regular profits not $2 Billion!!! Bush and Cheney must be laughing so hard at how gullible the American people are as they continue to rape the economy for themselves and their cronies who will again spend millions of dollars to ensure the gravy continues for another four years!!

Chatt, you obviously don't have a clue on how oil prices are derived. OPEC establishes how much we pay for a barrel of oil not our government or our domestic gas companies. We are virtually held hostage by foreign oil because the libs fight so hard to keep us from being dependent by banning drilling off of Florida, Ca. and Alaska.
You also appear to have failed to realize that most of what we pay at the pumps are taxes. Again, thank your friendly tax loving Dems for that.

I guess that Clinton cozied up to the oil companies also when gas prices went from .76 to 1.35 here in Atlanta. On average, that was a larger increase then the 50% increase that you claim.
I am sure that you will not criticize Clinton for this which shows your hypocrisy.
I don't blame Clinton for the gas increase nor do I blame Bush. Bet you can't say the same.

Britt - First of all, I'm no Bush fan...most of the conservatives can tell you how much I rag on him. He's anything but conservative in my book, but that's another story for another day.

The other reason gas prices are so high is because of federal and state taxes. You knock those out and gasoline drops between 35 and 45 cents a gallon.

Finally, think about inflation...2-3% a year on average. Have gas prices kept up with inflation? Heck no, they've maintained less than 1% increase over the last 30 years...and much of that was taxes.

Had gas prices kept up with inflation, we would be paying $4-5/gallon right now. Ask the Europeans how they feel about $3-4/litre.

Bush is meeting with the oil companies because he doesn't need $3/gal pump prices in an election year. The big integrateds are making money hand over fist on their E&P with crude prices where they are. Why would they care about a temporarily employed public servant?

ANWR is a hoax a far as a a solution to energy independence. It MAYBE would drop imports by 7-8%, and it has a finite life. So its only a short-term solution at best. Actually, its a gimme to the big E&Ps because the incremental investment to tie over from the North Slope is, in relative terms, small.

Iraq is still not a member of OPEC, yet sits on the world's second largest reserve of oil. We just need to secure the pipelines, talk the Iraqis into turning that spigot wide open, and drown OPEC in a sea of Iraqi oil. Gas prices would go through the floor, the economy would take off like a Saturn rocket, and Bush would get re-elected easier than you could say "four more years."

What oil supply on this earth is not finite?? The fact is, by all reasonable accounts, there is a huge, untapped reserve in the anwar region and all we have to do is GO GET IT. Even if it would only reduce our dependence on mideast oil by a fraction, at least it would give us some leverage in dealing with OPEC, and their "take it or leave it" pricing strategy. If we open up exploration in anwar, opec will be much easier to deal with....
