Crap like this may be why coaches weren't lined up at "one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin".

Too many arrogant people think they need to have a say or input into football decision making.

Linky

I'm just shocked Saban didn't want to go there. Just look at all the help he would have had running that program with those boosters and their "knowledge about the game".

At the end of the article:

"I don't see how they can miss," McCombs told the paper. "They can get anyone they want. They can close their eyes and go 'Eeny-meeny-miny-moe' and end up with someone good."

Really? Besides our coach, I saw other big names running away from that job and that meddling crowd.

He believes that Strong would make a "fine position coach"?Has he watched Louisville and the turn around the Strong did after Steve Kragethorpe? (Ok probably not) That is the height of arrogance. And, the whole Saban situation proved his last statement wrong. They cannot just get whoever they want. This is a great hire for them if Strong can fight through all this political garbage.

How surprising that some Texas blowhard booster wouldn't want an African American coaching their team. He said something to the effect that Strong is good enough for a coordinator or position coach but not head coach. How demeaning and patronizing. Coach Strong is a very good coach and certainly deserves the opportunity even though he evidently wasn't the first, second, third or whatever choice.

I'm not going to go off half cocked and say this is about race, but the LSUFreek gif just got funnier.

"He (McCombs) publicly lobbied last week for Texas to hire former NFL coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden." Not very bright is he? Jon is never going to a college program, ever. He couldn't stand it. He doesn't have the patience for it.

Arrogance is abundant in Texas which is no suprise. If it weren't for lawsuits I would suggest Charlie Strong walk up to ole Red, smile, and then hit him in the mouth.

They really don't understand how that kind of public arrogance plays to general audiences, or more importantly, to stronger coaching candidates.

For that, I am eternally grateful.

What would be really great right now would be if Charlie pulled a "Rich Rodriguez" and went back to Louisville.

All I can say is why are we surprised? All some people have to do is open their mouth and remove any doubt of stupidity. Charlie Strong is an outstanding coach.

The fact that he said maybe he's good enough for a coordinator position is JAW DROPPINGLY STUPID. He was coordinator for a MNC team! I would think the debate about that one is over.

If I were Red I'd keep my mouth shut. First because what he's saying is stupid. Charlie Strong is an excellent head coach and did a fine job at Louisville. Secondly, he could very easily attack the race baiters and sensationalists to the program claiming he is saying all these things because Strong is black. That is the LAST thing Strong or the program needs right now.

They need to let Strong do his thing, coach those kids up and try and put Texas back on the college football map.

I don't disagree that he is a fine coach, but the UTx job is so much more than just a coaching job. You've got more than your share of "entitled Boosters" who think they are owners not supporters. You also have the albatross Longhorn Network which will interfere with his time to coach the team. I am not sure the he will be able to handle the PR side of the job. UTx almost needs a CEO, not a coach.

It should not matter that Charlie Strong is african american, but I am afraid it will. He will need to win big and early to win over the UTx fans and boosters. Winning has a way of solving all problems though.

And where does he get off saying the UTex should be one of the top three university programs in the world? (Apparently a lot of their fanbase have this delusion) -- How many national championships have they won? They're not even tops in their own conference -- the Sooners have a much better record. And nationally, Alabama, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Michigan, I believe Nebraska as well, all have more championships. And there are plenty more who have just as many. So, this view they have of themselves as one of the elite programs....I just think they are legends in their own minds.

Here's the next statement, I'm sure:

"Some of my best friends are (fill in the blank). In fact, I drafted Randy Moss when twenty other teams passed him up due to character issues."
