CKD Tendency Of Close Games

The amount of close games has to do with how DeBoer wants game to be. He wants long sustained drives combined with the bend-but-don't-break defense that Wommack runs.

Saban is the model for tricky plays. Rare and few and far between.

They require way too much time in the limited practice of today with such complicated offenses.

We also tended to run the same ones, like the toss back to the QB, and we clearly had a few packages for fake kicks and the like.

Grubbs require ballerina like timing and precision and our players run all over. Too much practice time for what we get from them I think...

Better to get your basics down, get the running game stronger, and just line up and dominate from all different angles and attack the whole field.

Tell me how you felt when it was 17-0 and we stopped their pitiful offense again and got the ball back close to midfield??? I was sitting back relaxing in my recliner like I didn't have a care in the world!

But then, all of a sudden, we run that stupid little "trick" play that was not only ill-conceived but ill-timed (because we had been running it down their throats better than we've run the ball all year!!!)! It put us in 2nd and long and we went 3 and out and after that drive we have several 3 and outs (or non-point-producing drives).

This is when the barn started their comeback with two field goal drives and then when they scored on the first drive of the 3rd quarter and made it 17-13, how'd you feel then???

I think the point of the OP is when you have an opponent on the ropes, you go ahead and deliver the knock out punch! And yes, I feel this is more of a "Grubb issue" than a CKD one, but he's got "veto power" on every play so this is something I hope changes going forward.

And this score took place with 1:00 gone in the third quarter. We can't give up these quick, busted coverage scores.

Agree!

And we played zone the whole game, but despite that, we still had two major busts. About 1/3 of their total 400 yards came on two busted plays (and there was one called back for an illegal formation with 5 in the backfield).

Some of you have points but I'm just not seeing anyone dominate games other than Ohio State, and with them I think it's a combination of essentially the best talent in college and of course a pathetic schedule. Aside from them I don't see any other team that has separated themselves from the pack. We probably have 16 or more teams that could go all the way to the title and only 12 slots to go around. In years past in most years we could agree on 4 without much issue. maybe there would be some debate about the 4th one in. Today the difference between #2 and #16 is almost unquantifiable. Essentially the committee is might as well cast lots.

You are speaking to parity. I think this post is more about taking the knock out punch against an opponent when you have them down.

For instance, if we score another TD against the barn in the 1st half and stretch the lead to 24-0, I think the game is over. And, we had more than a few chances to do that, but didn't.

The second half all season has been strange. The offense problem is strange. Not scoring against Georgia in the second half after putting up 24 in the first half took the cake for me. Coaches need to do something different even if it is wrong because not scoring cannot get much worst. Controlling the tempo of the game means nothing if you cannot score some. Mental toughness, and possible physical conditioning, could have something to do with it. I just really don't know, but I would start with the play calling. Call plays like you are behind and see what happens.

Like most things, I think it's a combination of factors. In regards to your last statement, when you get the ball back in the OU game with 7:06 in the 4th quarter, try to score as it's one minute left on the clock. If you fail, the offense likely has another opportunity to score before the game ends. Instead, 7 of our 13 plays were runs (when Ty had been torching them) and it was clear the idea was drive it down, milk the clock, and win by a least one point (FG).

Again, I don't have a problem winning this way if that's the only way you can do it. I coached in HS with teams where our HC said "the only way we can win this game is to shorten it and hopefully be down no less than one score in the 4th". Against better competition, that's what we've been doing and it's fair to expect it because of the talent differential. In fact, you can make a strong argument that's how Kirby coaches UGA against tough teams. However, there's no reason why the South Carolina's and Auburn's on our schedule should be playing with us that deep in the 4th quarter. There's plenty of evidence to suggest it's more than coincidence at this point.

I can't accept that this is just parity in the sport.

Nobody said it's "just" parity, though.

I'll make two points about Ohio State in 2025: first point.-they've played essentially -0- one score games.

They beat Texas by 7 points.
Florida beat Texas by 8 when the teams were more in sync.
And you might want to look at the stat sheet.

Texas had more yards, more first downs, more passing and more running yards than Ohio State did. Where they lost the game was penalties and the turnover. And for the so-called Buckeye juggernaut, they had 7 points against Texas at the end of 3 quarters. Yes, the same Texas team that that perpetual powerhouse Mississippi State blistered for 31 points in 3 quarters.

And remember: the game was in Columbus.

No one has really come close to threatening them. Are they not in the same sport? 2nd point - the Big 10 has no parity to speak of. The bottom dwellers are deep in the barrel.

Parity doesn't explain the Big Ten conference.

It DOES explain the SEC and the Big 12. It even explains the ACC up to a point.

One of the problems with the B1G is that Penn State freaked out over consecutive losses to UCLA and NWestern (combined with Franklin's problems through the years of beating those teams but not the cream of the crop).

Keep in mind that despite the internal carnage, they nearly knocked off Indiana.
