CNS's remarks on confidence and trust are important

I am in the group that thinks that Coach Saban's remarks in press conferences are often messages to the team. In one he said the players needed to trust and have confidence in what they were doing. After the game Saturday he again alluded to this point.

At first I thought he was speaking mostly about Milroe, trusting the o-line (though in the Texas game they didn't earn a lot of trust), trusting his receivers enough to throw before they break, trusting his instincts about when to run or throw it away. Now, I believe that was a wider message -- O-linemen trusting their calls/assignments, dbs trusting one another to switch off coverages, etc.

I'm hoping what we saw in Saturday's second half was the beginning to buy into these concepts and come together more as a team. In short, have confidence in themselves, coaches, and each other. If that happens, I'm very optimistic.

The talent is there....if they are able to put it together, mesh those individuals into a team, then they've got something.

This is why tough early games can be an issue for a team that hasn't come together yet. NFL has 4 preseason games that don't count. College football, you're just thrown in the deep end sometimes, trial by fire. Look at Clemson for instance....they started off with a conference game, they are now 0-2 in the ACC and very much done 4 games in.

We seem to have come together in that 2nd half. I hope it sticks.

I guess I'm having trouble buying into that being for the whole team. Why would an offensive lineman not trust his blocking assignment? If every play is designed for success (why else call the play?) then why would they question that? Why would a DB question their calls to switch if that's what the scheme called for?

I don't think the mistakes we make in those situations are for a lack of trust, but a lack to concentration and attention to details.

I think it has more to do with Milroe still. Like on one of the 1st passing plays against OM when he bailed out of the pocket and got sacked, he had a clean pocket and no pressure. He should have trusted it and stepped up. He's giving up on the play when he does this. He's not skilled to throw on the run and when he backs out of the pocket by the time he's rolling out the defense has time to adjust. It's not only a wasted play but it can also be a negative play that gets us behind the sticks.

Just cant take a step back. Think the D is going to be good enough, offensive got to get better every week. This includes the play calling.

next two games I think will be a good barometer. Road games. SEC games. Safe to say we will handle some advertisty. So far this team hasnt handled adversity very well. Need to show they can if we are going to have a good season going forward

If they can keep creating success on the field hopefully wither will continue to grow and start trusting each other. Very difficult today in a me oriented society.

My minister said this statement the other day that really resonated with me:

"When your competence is questioned, your confidence is shaken."

People, including many of the fan base (myself included), have been questioning much of this year's team and playing to the standard. I think that is what CNS is fighting so hard by telling the players not to listen to the outside voices and focus on what you can do to get better. He's trying to get that confidence back. I teach MS and HS students. Trying to get their confidence in themselves back after a failure is the toughest thing to do. It starts with reminding them who they are and having them trust they can get back.

My minister also had this to say this week:

"In this world you will get knocked down. Don't lose heart. You aren't knocked out."

Sounds a lot like what Jesus said in John 16:33

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
