Coach DeBoer on why Ryan Williams wasn't thrown to in Iron Bowl

Immature.

I’m mostly disappointed that there wasn’t a lot of work done to improve in the off season.

I guess that’s going to sometimes be a side effect of giving young guys too much money and attention at such a young age.

They think they are polished and NFL ready when they are not.

I have also been disappointed that our WR Coach and CKD let him slack off like this and not make improvements.

It’s their jobs to help the players improve and not allow such a regression.

I agree with what others have said, get him with Smitty in the offseason and let him whip him in to shape. The kid has amazing potential, but he just needs to mature and become more physically and mentally tough.

He literally worked out with Smitty multiple times this summer. Why are we trying to start stuff that he didn't put in any work this summer; when it is actually the opposite? He put in a crazy amount of work this offseason. He has lost confidence. It happens unfortunately. I firmly believe that he will gain his confidence back and deliver ( perhaps even tomorrow).

A more mature player probably does put in "a lot of work to improve in the off season"...

It was a bad move for him to reclassify and miss that last year of high school.
not speaking about RW specifically, but more broadly, skipping your last year of HS should not even be a thing that's allowed in athletics for any reason. It's rarely even a good thing for exceptional academic performers. I don't even like the "i graduated early so I could get to college for spring practice."

He may be too small rn
He is for sure not going to be on an NFL field. Brodie Croyle once said in an interview, after 2 seasons in the NFL, that if a guy had 2 feet of space between he and defender in college, he was considered "wide open". In the NFL, he said that shrank to 2 inches of space.

Williams has all that speed, all those moves, but he won't have that cushion at the next level. Undersized in his frame.
