To his family and friends he is a very nice guy, but once he leaves that behind and enters the world of college football I think he's not very nice at all. We have gotten used to a nice timid coach as in CMS and this coach may take some getting used to.

Unfortunately , losing was what some of us were getting used to - not I . CNS is just what the doctor ordered . I believe Saban is the hardest working coach in the business and that's exactly what we need and deserve .

There's no room for being nice . Well , unless your school is the rival of a cms coached team . Where do nice guys always finish ? :frown:

yeah! I know last. But the not being a nice guy is hurting him with the media and I don't think he even cares.

... and I'm one who's glad he doesn't .

Media relations is not his job . IMO , Coach Saban's way of dealing with the media will lead to respect from those who loyally cover the Tide while exposing those who are not worthy of his , or our , time or trust . :cool2: I love it . It's similar to the ways of Ray Perkins - with one major exception - CNS can back it up . IMO , CNS is the coach who Perkins had always thought himself to be .

Don't let the press fool you . I've been on both sides of this fence . I spent years as a member of the media so I really do find it pretty amusing . The loyal Bama reporters do still know what's going on in T'town , they just don't have the quotes to verify some things and report it . Those who don't know what's up , probably shouldn't . It's really no more than a game which CNS is both playing and winning .

Well put !!

I want to see how the team will respond after 2 a days. This will be something that these guys have not experienced under a hard working HC in quite a while.

i think coach saban treats people the way they treat him.i wouldn't call most members of the media "nice".look at where mike shula's niceness got us.

Didn't Coach Bryant say something about nice guys kissing their sister? Maybe I got that a little confused. Either way, don't need a nice guy at Bama.:biggrin2:

The greatest coach who ever lived wasn't a nice guy either in his days at Texas A&M and early days at Bama. Fact of the matter is that Bama coach didn't care either about the media or any outsiders opinions of him or his coaching style.

A good read on Coach Bryant's early, tough days at Bama can be read in the book The Missing Ring. Sometimes to be successful in football and in life you have to sometimes not be the most pleasant person in the world to be around to get your point accross.

And I do agree: Nice guys finish 6-6 and 0-4 against Auburn.

Coach Saban on the Alabama Press:

Saban said he might adopt "a little more flexibility" in his access rules once he builds relationships and trust with Alabama media who cover the Tide. But he also has made it clear that his first priority is winning and rebuilding a storied program that has been up-and-down in recent years.

"I respect what everybody does, and I hope they respect what we're trying to do," Saban said.

The press makes demands on Coach Saban, demands he doesn't always appreciate. The press prints lies about Coach Saban questioning his professionalism yet the press has made a mockery of their own professionalism. There is a select group who for one reason or another will never print one word of truth or one positive thing about Nick Saban and I don't blame Coach Saban one bit for removing their names from his Christmas Card list.

If you think Coach Bryant scheduled his day around the media, think again. Most successful coaches have a few close media connections but do not allow blanket contact with any and all who desire it.

He is doing what needs to be done and is managing his valuable time as it should be...recruiting, coaching, more recruiting, more coaching. That does not leave time for PF and the likes.

Roll Tide!

finishing 10-2 ooops I mean 6-6 has nothing to do with being a nice guy.

Everyone talks about Bear's early days - In Bears prime he was accomodating to the media. Please don't try and defend Saban by using the Greatest coach of all time. It's apples and cranberries not even close.

Ray Perkins was not a nice guy but I didn't see any NCs during his tenure

You can be a nice person and still field a winning FB team - Tony Dungy won the super Bowl and I think he is a very nice person

Saban is doing the right thing at this time and he will lighten up - Spurrier uses the press to his advantage he's not a jerk toward them - He has won the same amount of NCs as Saban. Bobby Bowden doesn't seem to be a jerk toward the media. Tressel..? Pete Carroll..?

I do not think Saban is as bad as has been portrayed but like I said before PR is a good thing for a college coach to have.

You can use the media to your advantage

I do not understand how some people percieve his alledged attitude toward the media as a good thing.

Per misquote" The quote from Coach Bryant about "kissing your sister" came from a quote relating to ending a game in a draw, especially going for a tie/

I find it funny that the people commenting on how nice or not nice Coach Saban is or isn't, are using the media as a measuring stick. Let me ask this...Do any of you who are commenting on him not being nice actually know the man? How about you capnfrog...you started the thread (and this isn't meant personally, but a true question), do you know the man or are you just going by what you've read in the media and on this forum?

I can tell you all that I spent 4 days around Coach Saban last week at the football camp and he was very gracious to everyone who was there. He stayed around after the camp and signed autographs for the kids and/or parents who wanted them, he allowed pictures and never once did I see him deny anyone what they wanted. Why did he do this? Because he had completed his job. When he is in work mode it is no different than any of us in work mode. I know when I am busting my butt working I don't like interruptions for reasons that don't relate to what I'm doing and the same is true of most people I know. Why are there two standards just because he's a football coach?

Personally I think most of you who are complaining about his actions need to take a look at your own work life and tell me how you would feel when you are working on a tough project if a coworker wanted to interrupt you simply because that coworker was bored and wanted to talk about the job you were doing, but your job depended upon millions of people's happiness (and don't try and act like Coach Saban's job doesn't affect the happiness of millions of people). The man is simply doing his job and he is a very nice accommodating man when he's not in "coach mode".

One last thought...I also don't think many of you are aware that Coach Saban and the entire coaching staff only have a limited amount of time each week that they are allowed to spend with football players. I think they are allowed 20 hours a week (yes, that's 7 days...20 hours). How would you like to only have 20 hours a week if your job was as important as Coach Saban's is to Alabama Football fans? I can personally tell you that I would tell the media to stick it in their ears if they bothered me and wrote bad things about me before they knew me. I think the perceptions of Coach Saban will change over time and it's just a bit premature to be making blanket statements simply because a few media members got their panties in a bunch because he doesn't feel to talking to them.

Thanks, I was being sarcastic/funny (trying). All self respecting Bama fans know the "tie" quote. Roll tide!

"I'm a man who discovered the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That's what kind of man I am." - Nick Saban

Actually he is a really nice guy. He just values his own time.
