I'd take much bigger exception to Oregon being as high as they are. That's not something I've seen come up before. Oklahoma generally is a bit lower than some people think because their brand recognition is much higher than their actual fanbase, but usually not that low.

This reminds me of the other data that came out that made some sense then had some absolute rubbish in there like Duke being ranked fairly high.

In this case, I can explain Syracuse being as high as they are. They are the most popular football team in New York, a fairly large state, the fans just aren't that enthusiastic. I'm still a bit perplexed by the data because the previous NYT data I saw was based on Facebook likes and for instance Alabama has almost double the likes of Oregon so not entirely sure what's going on there.

Just another data point I guess. You take that, compare it to the other data, you start to get something that makes more sense...

You will note though that there's no Clemson or Miami for what ever that is worth.
Syracuse may be the most popular program in the state of New York, but that's not saying much at all. There is no way they have even a million fans, much less over 3 million. It's absurd.

I agree Oregon absolutely does not belong on this list.

Frankly I don't think Notre Dame has over 8 million fans, and Texas doesn't have over 7 million. If Texas had that many fans, the Longhorn Network wouldn't have tanked.

Notre Dame has a national fanbase that extends heavily in the North east and mid west. I can believe their numbers however I think they maybe dwindling.

The LHN failed because no one wanted to watch high school games and Texas vs Kansas. The LHN never had coverage of the huge conference games nor did it provide profitable content. Unless you are sub channel of the network that gets the big game it’s stupid to invest that much into a PPV network. It’s why I think CBS is stupid for going to the B1G when Fox holds the 1st pick.

Chicago metro area has 9.5 million potential Notre Dame fans. A large number of professionals, executives and owners in the area are Notre Dame alum. Then throw in Indianapolis northward and the Notre Dame diaspora spread around the country and there is a heck of a TV base for any top ten game ND plays. They have quite a hand to play when it comes to negotiations with a conference.

I amspeculating that the numbers are based on the amount of alumni. The problem is, a lot of the alumni could care less about the football program at some schools.

Not really it’s based around media attention. It’s why I say Oregon by itself is fool’s gold. Yes they have a mega donor but not much else. They have a very small fan base and live off Washington and California recruits.

Largest alumni bases

Another take. Not sure how realistic any of these are.

The schools make sense but the rankings and findings are a little questionable.

Well they have far more than Oregon so there is that… But CA’s list is mostly saying media hits= fans from what it seems. I have to see the methodology.

But Auburn does bring in tons of ratings and revenue compared to much of the P5.
Hmmm. I watch awbern football so that I can root for whomever is playing them...I guess I was "counted" as an awbern fan.
