Vols#1,

First, welcome to the board. We've always got room for serious fans here that like to intelligently discuss Bama football and the college game in general. If you enjoy that, along with healthy, respectful debate, I think you will find this to be one of the better discussion boards on the 'net.

I pretty much agree with your assessment of both us and your guys. In terms of the level of coaching ability our team now is being led by, I think we have literally gone from worst to first in one fell swoop with the Saban hire. But, like you said, I do think it will take some time before we are back in the hunt for championships. But one thing is for sure--I don't think you'll see us lose many, if any, games due to bone- headed decisions coming from the sidelines. The days of your man and the other HC's in the league privately laughing about the ineptness and predictability of our guy at the top are over.

As far as you guys are concerned, I simply cannot see Fulmer hanging around much longer. What do you think the succession plan is up there? Will "Cut" get any serious consideration for the job when the time comes? Or will they conduct a legitimate nationwide search for a coach? Seeing how UF scored big getting UM out of Utah, looks to me like that might be the best option for you guys, although I'm really not looking to give you guys any advice;). I think DC has proven to be the best coordinator around, and was greatly responsible for the rebound last season, but we all know what he did as a head coach in Oxford. Also, one last question-- I understand from some Sooner friends that you guys have scheduled a home and home with Oklahoma. What years are those games set for? Just curious...Again, welcome to Tidefans.

We have half a dozen Vol fans who post with some regularity here and have for many years garnering a good reputation. We have also had to cut a few from our roster. ;)

Re: Congratulations

Don't be afraid to defend your team but remember we do have some problems with Fullmer.
Some?!?!?! :biggrin2:

Hey and welcome aboard, I have faith in JPW he's hasn't started shaving the football hairs off his chin just yet he's got a little ways to come, but I'd say he's as good now as some senior QB's in the conference.

it'll be a good 3 or 4 years before people hate to play us again , but I imagine there will be significant improvement on our team, I wouldn't be surprised for us to be alot better than some of the talking heads would like us to be.

I agree...while it is going to take time for us to get back to the level of playing for championships, I definitely think we'll field a very competitive team this year that will be in every game.

Not this year but next we play for and win the National Championship. In a very large part due to John Parker Wilson!:biggrin2::biggrin::biggrin2:

Lets not get all touchy guys. I am just asking legitimate questions.
I'm just curious as to the "rumors" of "he's not that good" when he put up above average stats as a first year starter, red shirt sophomore and behind one of the worst OL's in the country. I'm not following "he's not that good" part. What's the basis considering the facts?

Buzzard, the facts, although interesting, are irrelevant to some people. These same people should also never themselves a haircut after 3 martinis, 3 margaritas, or 3 shots of tequila.

I agree on all points. It just amazes me how so many rival fans do not like John Parker Wilson and talk about him like he needs a helmet, mouth piece and cork on the end of his fork at the dinner table.

He's a good athlete and a very good quarterback. His poise and toughness is what impressed me the most last year. Sure, he made some bone headed mistakes but he was a first time starter and red shirt sophomore. Kind of have to figure he's going to make some "first timer" mistakes.

I'd love nothing more for JPW to bust out in this new offense this season and throw 30 td's and over 3k yds. Talk about being able to hear a rat urinate on cotton. That's how quiet it would be from all of his critics.

Welcome #1VOL -- I live in arangeland but I've not even heard or read anything negative about JPW. He will be one of the top QBs drafted, mark my words.

One thing that can be said of CMS is that he stockpiled a bunch of good guys for the OL by RSing them. With coaching they are now getting, I expect improvement in the OL with #71 leading the way. JPW was impressive with last year's OL -- imagine just how good he is going to be with the OL having experience and depth.

JPW does not get rattled unlike other QBs in the SEC. He is a winner.

Welcome aboard, Vols#1.

Not to stir the pot, but y'all had to come from behind to win last year and that was with us being very inept as far as our offensive line, coaching and conditioning went. Now that there's a new sherrif in town and the S&C has been stepped up and so on I think that we are gonna give alot of teams fit and come out on top in some games that people don't think we'll win. I actually think we will beat UT ( I don't say that because you're posting on here ). I think the discipline will carry us through. We had some penalties last year that coupled with bone head coaching cost us dearly and I just don't think we'll have that this year.

I do like UT and have always looked forward to that game because it's always been a hard fought game.

Welcome to Tidefans dude. I'm the weird one being from California but go to school at Alabama. I think that this year's UT-UA game will be close, but could involve a bit of scoring. Unless we can dominate on both sides of the LOS, I'm tempted to lean towards losing at home to the Vols, although to be honest, a lot of the Tide's big games I find going either way. I also think that by Year 3, we will be "back" in the sense of at least being a strong contender in the SEC. NC contender is a maybe, but at least in the SEC, we should be mentioned among LSU and Florida to win the SEC.

I do have a question for you, Vol: What do you think is the problem of UT's discipline problems lately? They obviously have the talent to play well, and for the most part, they do. But something just always seems to fall apart every season for them, or at least breakdown. I get the feeling that UT lets down everyone, at least since they won the NC in 1998 (unless it's a Tide fan obviously). Is it Fulmer, his coaches, the players' attitudes, some combination?

Y'all shouldn't have a problem with Cal. Even with Tedford doing the essential QBing for Longshore, y'all really should be able to walk out of the Hippie Stadium with a win.

I am not very familiar with JPW so I cant really have an informed opinion. I have heard others who are not convinced he will be as good as he is percieved to be. Again, I dont know what to think. I dont know what the other opinions are based on. I just know that I have heard them, along with some great ones as well. I just wanted to get you guy's view. I will agree that with the stats I have seen, he looks to be pretty good IMHO.

Since our OL woes were well known, stifling our running game, I don't know where the negative comments are coming from. I do know that the coaches who've observed him are salivating, along with the pro scouts who've seen him (at least in the top ten QBs taken, this year). Maybe you need to get some opinions outside TN. At any rate, rather than being vague, just be forthcoming and tell us who is not impressed with him. That'll give us some basis to discuss the issue. Otherwise, it just slides towards smack - "your QB's not that great." Give us something we can judge...

You know, I am not sure about the discipline problems. What I can tell you is that of all of the UT fans I know somewhere in the neighborhood of 60%-80% want a new coach. As for me, I am willing to see what Fulmer can do this year. I know that we have alot of freshmen that may be called on to step up. I also know that it should not be a problem to at least win 9-10 games. If we can do that then I am willing to give another year. If we cant then I am ready for new leadership. I do not think CDC will be his replacement. I think AD Hamilton has seen what a whole new direction in coaches can do for a program (i.e. UT's resurging basketball program). I look for a young coach with a new kind of fire, when the time comes. Cal does not worry me for one reason and that is if we lose that game, it does not hurt in the SEC and that is our first step to getting back into the hunt for NCs. What worries me is keeping pace with the SEC. Can CPF keep pace? recent history says no.

The opinions I have heard are coming from fans of other teams. I know they are probably biased. That is why I asked you guys. While I know that it is easy for you guys to be biased towards him, it is reasonable to think that if there were doubt that you guys, being his fans and watching him close, would share some of that doubt. I personally think, judging from stats alone, that he will be fine. I have also read some great opinions coming from cfb analysts. Only time will tell. Who would have thought that Ainge would have set a record last year for completion % at UT?

I think this year will tell a lot about both QBs. Of course, Wilson has more time. Rival fans' opinions are always suspect, because 95% of them never really watch opposing QBs unless they're playing against the home team, so the opinion depends entirely on how the visiting QB performed at the observer's home. JPW had to perform frequently from his back or running for his life...
