If you are at work and you have a task that needs to be completed however your boss informs you that you have to have a man help you as opposed to a woman. what would your reaction be other than laughing?

Depends upon the assigned task. Last I checked, there were things men do better than women and things women do better than men. It could also depend upon what woman/women were available at the time your boss wanted the task done. Maybe the women available have reasons why they are not suited to the task.

Basically, your "crazy question" doesn't have enough information in it.

As a business owner, I think I can answer this question. When the boss gives you and a co-worker a job to do, you do it as instructed and don't ask why. If he thinks the job is best accomplished by two men instead of by a man and a woman, you can bet he knows more about the the job than you and has made his decision based on his knowledge and experience on that type of project and manpower required to do the job correctly, safely and time-efficiently. Those are the reasons you're working for him, not the other way around.
In short, he hired you do do a job for him, not to second guess his decisions. Now shut up and get to work.

quality control, safety inspections etc. basically looking at product making sure it passes the eye test. prolly weighs about a lb or so. about an hour left in the work day. all of a sudden i get about 2-3 extra hours of work. even though i'm about 50% over what i should do for the day already. so i say, i cant finish within an hour. so boss says i have to stay alone. I see others done with their tasks and others doing other various time killing activities. i see others being helped by 2 others to compelete their day ending task. so i go ask a female friend who i know wouldnt mind helping. but upon starting it's a big no. reason being, i need a man to help me. nevermind the fact that i was never offered any help and nevermind the fact that boss used to do the same job a couple years ago. boss is female. just a weird situation

boss is way short of an owner. actually her boss thought this situation was totally unacceptable and ridiculous

Not always. Sometimes they are one in the same. :biggrin2:
Regardless, the boss is still the boss. Do what the boss tells you or go find a different job.
If you think the boss is/was wrong, then find a time and place to discuss it with him/her - preferably in private. But never, ever question the boss's decisions before the job has been completed. You'll never get ahead (raise, promotion) by trying to show up your boss in their own territory. A poor work attitude will only get you passed over, or worse.

You got to learn to become a grinder, like this guy.

Were you told to specifically find a man to help or did the boss name a certain person who happens to be male?

Color me confused. By the way, I'm a "boss", and I have never made work assignments based on gender.

and you shouldnt base it on gender. which is odd about about the situation.

the boss didnt name a person specifically. i asked a female who was willing to help out since that is the status quo in that situation (getting help at the end of the day).. the female that was told i needed a man to help was visibly irritated by the statement. our jobs are interchangeable. so gender shouldnt have been the issue. maybe it was a personal issue with said female. btw, the boss is what you could probably call a shift leader. after speaking with the supervisor he advised me to talk to human resources. Like i said earlier, he couldnt believe things happened that way and was shocked of the needing a man to help statement.

As a former business owner in a non labor intensive job I always told each person I hired that there are 4 words not acceptable in my company "its not my job". No job in my company was beneath anyone doing not matter what their title or position was. That included myself.

I would answer phone calls if my receptionist was busy and could not get to the phone in time and sometimes some of my clients would say why are you answering the phone I would tell because it rang. I had a strict 3 ring max on incoming calls. I would do paperwork filing and clean the kitchen if it got too gross. I expected the same of all of my employees and they knew it was important that I think is one reason we and I had a successful business. Man or woman didn't matter but again no heavy labor intensive company.

If a wharehouse job where lifting 60lbs or such it would be a man over most women exception would be Rosie O'Donnell.

The secret to getting your questions answered or concerns addressed is that if you have a problem with your boss, his/her decisions, etc., you NEVER bring it in front of or within earshot of other employees. That's a huge no-no in the business world.
I think the way to handle this type of situation is to ask your boss if you could speak with him at his convenience, in private. When you're alone you should bring up that situation to him and voice your concerns. Do it the right way and not only will your concerns be addressed, but you are more likely to gain respect in your boss's eyes. Do it the wrong way and you're going to have troubles at that job for a very long time.

Men are known to be more assertive on average. Is it possible that the women in your company tend to "help out" when needed more than the men do, and that there is some resentment over that? If so, the instruction to get a man to help may seem sexist, but it may actually be an effort to reverse a trend in which women are taken advantage of.

Not every job position has the same level of autonomy. Some successful business owners recognize their own deficiencies, hire people for their expertise, and do well to trust their judgment. If I have a good reason for something, I don't mind giving it, as long as every little thing isn't questioned just because. I certainly don't mind asking why if I don't understand a reason for something, because I am expected to fully understand and adapt to requirements that change regularly. Not asking questions means wrong assumptions and failed projects. For the sake of rescheduling, it matters whether a deadline was given because of a relation to someone's payroll date, or whether it was chosen on a whim.

Back in the summer of 94 I was working in a deli on afternoons and weekends and on Friday afternoon, my boss wanted to know if I would open up with him the next day and help him clean the deli case, he was gay and at the time I had bleached blonde hair and I guess he thought I swung that way, I was like no, I will just come in when my shift begins. I really didn't want to find out if he was going to try and play hide the salami!
